Time magazine: All the disasters that happened in China in the past 60 years happened to Fu Gui and his family.

Repeated blows may make readers unable to sympathize, but Yu Hua's sincere pen and ink has shaped Fu Gui into an existing hero. When this heavy novel ends, the will to live is the only thing that can't be taken away from Fu Gui.

Washington post: To be alive is an epic, but it is simple. The story of struggle and survival left an indelible impression of cruelty and kindness. In Yu Hua's works, the characters struggle between animal instinct and human nature. The cold will that Yu Hua imposed on the narrative made the novel go beyond the normal track.

Seattle Times: Yu Hua is not grandstanding. Every heavy tragedy is painful. Everyone feels the numbness of a child's death. Occasionally, there are moments of relaxation, beauty and kindness ... living is a cruel reading. Yu Hua spared no effort to show how misleading fate destroyed people's lives.

Yu Hua's Star Tribune is concise and powerful, reaching people's hearts. The ending of this novel is unforgettable Fu Gui, the only living old man, also named his old cow Fu Gui. The narrator watched the old man and the old cow slowly disappear into the twilight, leaving him alone: "I saw the vast land with a strong chest, which was a summoning gesture, just like a woman summoning their children and readers."

United press international: The novel weaves a tapestry of human nature with a seemingly indifferent tone against the background of historical turmoil. Its calm style makes readers share joys and sorrows with the rich and the poor. When good luck looks down on him, we will laugh happily, and when he encounters bad luck, we will feel dejected. Tragedy always comes one after another, making it hard to breathe. One writer even called life "China's book of work".

Alive tells the story of a person's life, is the witness of an old man who has gone through the vicissitudes of life, and is a drama that deducts the hardships of life.

The narrator of the novel I got an idle job when he was young-collecting folk songs in the country. In the season when summer has just arrived, I met this old man named Fu Gui and listened to him tell his rough life experience:

Fu Gui, the master of the landlord, gambled like a dog, and finally lost all his property. In poverty, Fu Gui went to see a doctor because his mother was ill. Unexpectedly, he was caught by the Kuomintang army on the way and captured by the People's Liberation Army. Only when I got home did I know that my mother had passed away, and my wife and family had worked hard to raise a pair of children, but my daughter was unfortunately mute.

The real tragedy began to unfold gradually.

Jia Zhen can't do heavy work because of rickets; The son died because of the same blood type as the county magistrate's wife, and he lost too much blood to save the county magistrate's wife; Daughter Xia Feng married Hill, the eccentric in the city, on the recommendation of the captain. After giving birth to a baby boy, he died of massive bleeding on the operating table.

Three months after Xia Feng's death, Jia Zhen died one after another. Hill was a porter, and was killed by two rows of cement slabs because of crane mistakes; Grandson Kugan returned to the countryside with Fu Gui, and his life was very difficult. Even beans taste terrible. Fu Gui was distressed and cooked beans for Kugan, but Kugan ate beans and died. ...

The rare warmth in life will be torn to pieces by death again and again, leaving only the old Fu Gui and the old cow to remember in the sun.
