Zhoushan dialect, commonly known as "Wu Pin: cieu sae ghae wo", is a branch of Wuyu-Taihu-Yongjiang-Ningbo dialect, which retains the voiced sound and entering tone in the Middle Ages. Zhoushan dialect is a branch of Ningbo dialect in Wu dialect. Historically, Zhoushan Islands have long been under the jurisdiction of Dinghai County under the jurisdiction of Ningbo Government. Zhoushan (Dinghai County) and Ningbo (Fucheng) are separated only by a strip of water. After the lifting of the sea ban in these years, most of the people who returned to Dinghai County came from other five counties in Ningbo.
