A long tongue is good, so why do people gossip and so on, and defile the Buddha?

Two different things.

A Buddhist term, the tongue is wide and long, and it is one of the 32 adult statues of Buddha. Also known as wide and long wheel phase. Referred to as long tongue phase, wide long tongue and tongue phase. The tongues of Buddhas are wide and long, soft and thin, and can cover hair, such as copper. There are two characteristics in this stage: (1) words must be true. (2) Debate is beyond others. On Great Wisdom, Volume VIII (115):' If a person's tongue can cover his nose, let alone his hair? I believe in Buddhism in my heart and won't lie.

Note: Literally, gossip is about women, but in real life, it is not limited to men and women.
