Whose Dojo is Lingyin Temple?

Lingyin Temple was originally the Dojo of Indian monks' wisdom. Later, due to the prevalence of the legend of living Buddha in Jigong Li Xiuyuan, it gradually changed from the Dojo of the wise monk to the Dojo of Jigong Li Xiuyuan.

The founder of Lingyin Temple is West Indian monk Huili. In the Southern Dynasties, Liang Wudi granted land and expanded it. Qian Liu, King of wuyue in the Five Dynasties, ordered Yongming to prolong his life and restored it, and named it Lingyin Temple. During the Jiading period in Song Ningzong, Lingyin Temple was known as one of the "Five Mountains" in the south of Zen.

During the reign of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, the Buddhist monk Lingyin raised funds for reconstruction. It took 18 years to build the temple, and its scale jumped to the top of the southeast. In the 28th year of Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (1689), Emperor Kangxi was given the name "Yunlin Temple" when he visited the south.

Legend of Lingyin Temple

Legend has it that one day, the Jigong monk of Lingyin Temple had a whim and knew that there was a mountain peak in the distance. At that time, there was a village in front of Lingyin Temple. Jigong was afraid that the flying peaks would crush people, so he rushed into the village to persuade everyone to leave quickly. Because people in the village are used to seeing Jigong playing tricks on people, and think that this time is for everyone to have fun, no one listens to him.

Seeing that the mountain peak was about to fly, Jigong was in a hurry and rushed into a bride's house, picked up the bride who was meeting the bride and ran away. When the villagers saw the monk robbing the bride, they all shouted and chased him out. People were chasing, when suddenly they heard the wind whistling, the sky was dark and there was a "rumbling" sound. A mountain peak flew down in front of Lingyin Temple and overwhelmed the whole village. At this time, people realized that Jigong robbed the bride to save everyone.

After Jigong became a Buddha, his honorific title was as long as 28 words: "Great kindness, great compassion and great wisdom, purple and gold arhat, venerable person, making great efforts to treat ancestors and benefit ancestors, and praising Buddha three times", which was a combination of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and was extremely deified. Lingyin Temple has Daoji Zen Master Hall, where incense is flourishing.
