What does pattern recognition mean?

The so-called pattern recognition problem is to divide the samples into certain categories according to their characteristics through calculation. Pattern recognition is to study the automatic processing and interpretation of patterns by computers with mathematical techniques, and to collectively refer to environment and objects as "patterns".

With the development of computer technology, it is possible for human beings to study the complex information processing process, and an important form of this process is the recognition of the environment and objects by organisms. Pattern recognition focuses on image processing and computer vision, speech and language information processing, brain network group, brain-like intelligence and so on. And the mechanism and effective calculation method of human pattern recognition are studied.

The early research of pattern recognition focused on mathematical methods. At the end of 1950s, F. Rosenblat put forward a simplified mathematical model-perceptron, which simulates the human brain for recognition, and initially realized the training of the recognition system through various samples of a given category, so that the system has the ability to correctly classify other unknown categories after learning.

From 65438 to 0957, Zhou Shaokang put forward the method of statistical decision theory to solve the pattern recognition problem, which promoted the rapid development of pattern recognition research since the end of 1950s. In 1962, R. Narasiman proposed a syntactic recognition method based on source language relationship.

Fu Jingsun (K.S.Fu) has made systematic and fruitful research in both theory and application, and published his monograph Syntactic Pattern Recognition and Its Application in 1974.

J. Hofffield published two important papers in 1982 and 1984, which profoundly revealed the associative storage and computing ability of artificial neurons and networks, further promoted the research work of pattern recognition, and achieved remarkable application results in just a few years, thus forming a new discipline direction of artificial neural network method for pattern recognition.
