According to historical records, in the fifteenth year of Chongzhen (1642), Li Zicheng, the leader of the peasant uprising army at that time, together with Luo Rucai and Yuan Shizhong, three million rebels conquered Suizhou at that time. 1642 September, Li Zicheng attacked Kaifeng, replacing soldiers with water, and burst its banks in the Yellow River. The Yellow River flows south, flooding Suizhou City and forming the North Lake. Therefore, the North Lake is also known as "there is a city under water and a lake on the city".

Later, Li Zicheng planned to build its capital in Kaifeng. In order to weaken the influence of towns around Kaifeng, Suizhou city wall was torn down. Because the Yellow River flooded at that time, every flood would bring a lot of sediment, and over time it formed a low city. The diversion of the Yellow River flooded the ancient city of Suizhou, which is called the lake in the city and the city in the lake.
