The pronunciation of Ganjiang: [gàNJāng].

Ganjiang River is the first of the five rivers in Poyang Lake Basin, running through the whole territory of Jiangxi from south to north. The upper reaches of Ganjiang River, known as Gongshui, originated from Shiliao Point in Shicheng County, with a total length of 766 kilometers from the main river (main stream) to the mouth of Wucheng Lake.

The western part of the Ganjiang River Basin is the Luo Xiao Mountains, which is the watershed between the Ganjiang River system and the Xiangjiang River system. It consists of a series of NE-trending mountains, including Jiuling Mountain, Wugong Mountain, Wanyang Mountain and Zhuguang Mountain from north to south, with an altitude of over 1000 meters. The southern end is located in the eastern part of Nanling Mountain, and the main mountainous areas are Dayuling Mountain and Jiulian Mountain, which generally show east-west trend, forming a watershed between Ganjiang River system and Pearl River system.

The convenience of Ganjiang River, besides military and passenger use, is mainly freight. Since the first year of Wude in Tang Dynasty (6 18), the traffic of Ganjiang River has been very developed. As a shipping terminal in the middle reaches of Ganjiang River, Ji 'an used to be a cargo distribution center, which also stimulated the shipbuilding industry in Ji 'an. In the Song Dynasty, a shipyard under the supervision of eunuchs was set up in Ji 'an, and the wood needed for shipbuilding was mainly purchased from Yongxin and Suichuan.

Ganjiang shipping took away a large number of local products such as grain, minerals, wood, tea, ceramics, blue energy dyes and citrus fruits in Ji 'an. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, more than 80,000 tons of rice had been transported from Ganjiang River to Huaihe River every year and to Tongzhou, a suburb of Beijing, through the North-South Grand Canal.
