Huanggang neighborhood Committee folk custom

Lushan ancient temple; Commonly known as Tianhou Palace, it is located in the neighborhood committee community of Danggang Town in Chaonan District, Shantou City. It was built in the 28th year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty (1600) and rebuilt many times in Qing Dynasty and Republic of China. In recent years, it has been renovated, basically retaining the shape and appearance of the ancient temple. This temple is dedicated to Mazu, the sea god. According to legend, the temple site was originally a villager and used to be the study of Lu Yifeng in Henan Daotai. This study was once dedicated to the gods. In the early morning of the thirty-second year of Wanli, the villagers prayed for rain and resumed farming to solve their urgent needs, so they changed their study to Tianhou Palace. There is a "Gongbei" beside the palace. According to historical records, in the 16th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1643), the Qing army invaded and besieged Wugang town, and villagers beat gongs on the huge stones in Qitai to gather people for self-defense. In the future, whenever there are important activities in the countryside, people will gather here. During the Japanese invasion of China, villagers will knock gongs here many times and organize villagers to surround the Japanese army. "Gongshi" and "Qitai Pavilion" have become local scenic spots and historical sites, and serve as educational bases for patriotism and hometown love. The temple covers an area of 300 square meters and there is a square in front of it.

On the 20th day of the first month of each year, the people of Bogang are designated as Mazu's fixed rural parade day. Newly-married men or men who have just given birth to boys in Bogang community will put on big robes and take big sedan chairs to the Tianhou Palace to pick Mazu up. The villagers will prepare many sacrifices on the altar and divide them into dozens of stations, waiting for Mazu's parade from the 19th night to the 20th night of the first month. Good men and women will burn Mazu in the grandest and oldest way.

On the night of the 19th day of the first month, Mazu paraded everywhere, firecrackers and fireworks were entwined, and the Qiangang community was jubilant, and every household was decorated with lanterns. On the 20th night of the first month, the clan elders in Bogang Lvcuo will invite all families who got married or gave birth to boys last year to pay for "adding lanterns". The clan elders will use the money donated by the villagers to invite fireworks manufacturers to set off all kinds of colorful fireworks in the "Hutian" in front of the Luguo ancestral hall in Bogang. Every year, villagers near Bogang community go to the market this evening. Fruit stalls, sugar water stalls and various food stalls are crowded with the streets and alleys of Huanggang community. Old people are busy feasting their eyes on the theatre, middle-aged parents are busy worshipping Mazu, young men and women are busy visiting the night market to watch fireworks, and children are wearing new clothes for the New Year, eating snacks and singing happily. Everyone in Huanggang is more lively and excited than the Spring Festival, even men and women who are far away from home.
