How to Become an Intellectual: The Complete Works of Life, Chinese Studies and Wisdom by Nan.

What is an intellectual?

Mr. Nan said, Ceng Zi said, "A scholar has to strive for self-improvement and has a long way to go. Not as heavy as Ren thought! Death is not far away! " The taxi mentioned by Ceng Zi here is not an ancient taxi, but a general term for intellectuals. So what he means is that a scholar has the demeanor of a scholar.

So, what do you call it "Hongyi"? Mr. Nan explained: "Hong" means Hong Da, with great mind, tolerance and vision. "Easy" means dealing with things decisively, decisively, accurately, steadily and insightful.

As we said above, intellectuals often have a soft side. They are mentors and friends and often slander each other. Often there is no decision, lack of courage, and narrow-minded and easy to complain. Probably Ceng Zi discovered this common weakness of intellectuals long ago and put forward the standard of "Hongyi". A true intellectual is consistent in knowing and doing, in words and deeds, and in both internal and external studies. Not optical knowledge, learned, but also to be a man, to be good at doing things. I have my own opinions in learning and my own style in doing things. It's not just talk without practice, it's not pure idealism, it's not pure idealism and metaphysics, or it's detached, floating in the air and ungrounded.

In other words, the knowledge of a real intellectual is the combination of knowledge and life, and it is self-cultivation, not a pure so-called knowledge bucket. His knowledge is not only ideal, theoretical, forward-looking and instructive, but also realistic, vivid, operational and action-oriented, which can be transformed into a progressive force to promote reality. Such intellectuals, of course, are not nerds, but have the power to act and the unity of knowing and doing. For example, Confucius, Mencius and other sages are knowledgeable, but their knowledge has always been combined with real life, paying attention to both knowledge and truth itself and the reality of their home country. Therefore, their learning thoughts are very profound, vivid and convincing, and they are still convincing today.

Mencius said: "wealth can't be lewd, poverty can't be moved, and power can't be bent", which means that a real intellectual and a real gentleman should have such integrity and backbone. This spirit comes down in one continuous line with Hongyi, which shows that true intellectuals should not be weak, indecisive and mediocre. Not narrow-minded, without tolerance and vision.

Why do you want this requirement? In addition to trying to overcome their own weaknesses, it is also based on the original intention pursued by intellectuals, that is, ambition. Since we want to be intellectuals, we should have due responsibilities and missions. Compared with other occupations, this responsibility and mission is heavier and the road is more difficult.

The so-called "a long way to go", the mission of intellectuals is very arduous. If you want to represent the conscience of society, you have to tell the truth, and telling the truth is not so easy, neither easy to do nor easy to persist. First of all, ask yourself to do it, otherwise, what qualifications are there to guide and ask others to tell the truth? Secondly, it is very difficult to adhere to self-cultivation and lifelong self-cultivation. Social reality is very complicated, and it is always difficult for people to grasp it independently. It is difficult to do good deeds, and it is even harder to do good deeds for a lifetime; It's hard to be a good person, and it's even harder to be a good person all your life. Persistence is the power to overcome all obstacles, and it needs strong inner support, which is beyond the reach of ordinary people. Strong internal strength requires not only the encouragement of ideals and principles, but also the flexible grasp of self-cultivation and wisdom. Only in this way can we maintain tension and exuberant energy in reality, let ourselves stand firm, do things honestly, have no regrets about ourselves and others, and be a capitalized person; Do your duty, do your best to complete what you should do in your lifetime, and do not lose the sense of mission of a true intellectual.

Of course, as intellectuals, if action and practice are not the first priority, their so-called knowledge will inevitably be formalized or idealized, and it is not easy to become a reality. Confucius' theory was lonely at that time. Although it was "full of peaches and plums" at that time, the idealized things in his knowledge did not really become a reality until 500 years later. Therefore, idealization and aristocratization often show forward-looking and aristocratic power because of the contradiction with reality. But the premise is that we must firmly believe in its truth power, its universal value and its realization. Without this pursuit and self-confidence, a true intellectual is not a true intellectual.

Cao Xueqin wrote A Dream of Red Mansions not by himself, but by "Jia Yucun dialect" (fake village dialect), which endowed this magnificent masterpiece with profound life and social significance. Otherwise, how could he make a living by selling paintings in ten years of poverty, insist on "adding and deleting in ten years" and strive to create a dream of red mansions that has no practical significance? It's not that he has no other way out. Apart from an intellectual's immortal pursuit of "keeping his word", Cao Xueqin certainly has other hopes. I hope this work can not only arouse people's thinking about love, life and society, but also arouse people's thinking about the fate of intellectuals and their home country. In addition, he believes in the universal value of this work and its long-term vitality in the future. So he can persist in writing hard for a long time. His personality and thoughts fully reflect the pursuit of traditional intellectuals in China.

Cao Xueqin, a young man, showed extraordinary talent. He was good at poetry, writing and painting, and he was already famous at that time. At that time, some people saw that his family was in decline, and he often ate every meal. He kindly introduced him to a job as a painter in the Palace Painting Academy, and his income was quite rich. However, Cao Xueqin did not agree, but insisted on being poor and self-controlled, and lived a life of continuing to work hard to write The Story of the Stone (that is, A Dream of Red Mansions). With his temper, he will not serve dignitaries. Although life is hard, I am independent and free and have the motivation to write. I enjoy it, I enjoy it. I feel very happy. If he loses his dignity and personality and lives with others, he won't do it no matter how much money. However, life is always poor, you have to live. Later, he found a job in a school for aristocratic children. Here, he met Duncheng and Dunmin brothers and became lifelong friends.

However, his life is still poor and he has a strong self-esteem. Because he comes from Dont Ask For Help, no one knows his plight. Later, in order to concentrate on writing and save money, Cao Xueqin moved to Hongye Village near the Sleeping Buddha Temple in Xiangshan. Life has become more difficult because of poverty and disease. According to the poems of Duncheng and Dunmin, Cao Xueqin's family of three often drink porridge. Cao Xueqin loves to drink, but he has no money to buy it, so he drinks on credit and pays back the money after selling the painting.

The so-called "gentleman is poor", but Cao Xueqin's talent can lead a better life, but he still adheres to the integrity and mission of an intellectual. In this difficult environment, he can still enjoy himself and insist on writing a dream of red mansions.

In the autumn of the 28th year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong (A.D. 1763), Cao Xueqin's son died of smallpox. Cao Xueqin is very sad. Soon, he was poor and sick, and he had no money to see a doctor. On New Year's Eve, when other people's families are celebrating the New Year, Cao Xueqin, a literary master, quietly passed away. ...

Cao Xueqin was so poor and lonely before his death, even in the eyes of ordinary people, it was sad. Why does it have to be like this? However, in his personal view, this is the duty and it is worthwhile. Facts have proved that what he did embodies the spirit and integrity of a typical intellectual in China. With his own strength, he reached a height that many intellectuals could not reach, and completed a mission that several generations of intellectuals had not completed. His Dream of Red Mansions, "A dream of red mansions is full of words, and ten years of hard work is extraordinary", in which profound artistic and ideological values greatly enriched and promoted the development of China culture, and also set up an eternal monument for him personally.

Mr. Nan said: In this historical change, intellectuals should not go with the flow, let alone be afraid of stumbling. They must clearly understand the direction, keep the rudder steady, whether at the edge or at the core, and do their best to organize their own culture cautiously and sensitively to meet the requirements of the new era. That's a long way to go. We should endure desolation, be willing to be lonely, and sow invisible seeds in obscurity. No pains, no gains, success is not necessarily in me. You should have the spirit of elephant crossing the river and make unremitting efforts.

Looking at the intellectual and cultural circles in today's society, we don't have noble ideals in our hearts, and the people may hide a kind of strength of persistence and belief. What is worrying, however, is that this force not only lacks the environment for survival and development, but is almost overwhelmed by the excitement and prosperity in reality-influenced by the current wind, the whole intellectual and cultural circles are impetuous and can't stand loneliness, scholars are bright, their style of writing is degenerate, they are increasingly kitsch, and they are proud of grandstanding. Compared with traditional intellectuals, they have lost a lot of "poor" and so-called "smelly bones" temper, are no longer arrogant and arrogant, and no longer pretend to be spiritual aristocrats, but they are becoming more and more popular, which is an improvement; Mobility is getting stronger and stronger. I can't sit on the bench, nor can I stand poverty and loneliness. I began to learn from the stars in the entertainment industry, giving speeches and lectures everywhere, eager for knowledge to be quickly transformed into productivity and become a real fame and fortune. Enterprises need it, and so does society. Why not? As for social conscience and cultural mission, these illusory, difficult and painful roads, let others go! Let's be realistic.

Therefore, when talking about education, Mr. Nan once sarcastically said: "Knowledge is money." If you learn something, ask how much money you can earn after you finish it. "

When talking about the mission of intellectuals, Mr. Nan said: Why should an intellectual shoulder such a heavy responsibility to the country and society? Why go so far for history and life? Because an educated intellectual, "benevolence" is his responsibility. What is benevolence? Love, love society, love country, love the world, love the world. The Confucian spirit of being close to the people, loving the people and loving things has developed from personal love to love others, the world and even things and everything. The love for western culture is often a narrow flow; Benevolence is love in a broad sense. Therefore, intellectuals take saving the world as their responsibility, and this burden is very heavy. So, when can this responsibility be picked up on the road of life and history? Do you have to retire? This is not the time to retire until death. So this journey is very far away. Of course, to shoulder such a heavy burden and walk such a long way, we must cultivate two conditions of "tolerance" and "fortitude" formed by great mind, great verve, real determination, bold decision, far-sighted vision and correct opinion.
