The Lou Rat is a character in Kunqu Opera's masterpiece "Fifteen Passes" and an ugly corner. The play was originally written by Zhu (Qing Dynasty), and the fifteen passes currently referred to generally refer to the further adapted (written) version and the joke of fifteen passes in the novel Wake the World, which was premiered by Zhejiang Theatre Company on 1956.

There were Xiong Youlan and Xiong Huiyou brothers in Shanyang County of Huai 'an in Ming Dynasty. Bear was studying at home. The Feng family, a close neighbor, lost his daughter-in-law Hou Shi's gold ring and fifteen treasures. At the same time, his son died of poisoning. It happened that the gold ring was found in the bear's hand, and Hou Shi was imprisoned for adultery.

Xiong Youlan, a ferryman, went home with fifteen boats given to him by businessman Tao. Lu Yu escaped from Su Zuojuan because her stepfather lied about selling her fifteen strokes of money. The adapted version retains the story that the floor rat killed the butcher, especially the gourd, because he stole the fifteen passes, and the magistrate subjectively identified Xiong Youlan and Su Shujuan as murderers, while deleting Kuang Zhong's staying in the temple to interpret dreams for immortals, focusing on the different handling attitudes of Kuang Zhong, Chao Zhi and Zhou Chen. Through the shaping of these different characters, the darkness and decay of feudal bureaucracy are deeply exposed and thought-provoking.

The adaptation and performance of "Fifteen Passes" gave new life to Kunqu Opera. On May 8th, 1956, People's Daily published an editorial entitled "Saving a Play from a Play", praising it as a good example to implement the reform policy of "letting a hundred flowers blossom and bring forth the new". In the same year, Kunqu Opera "Fifteen Passes" was made into a color drama art film.

This play has been widely transplanted by many operas.
