Sandun, known as Shandun, Shandun and Li Lan in ancient times, has been known as the land of plenty and fruits since ancient times. There are three water piers in China, namely, Wenxing Pier, Dengcai Pier and Shuiyue Pier.

Sandun is an ancient water town, and its water source is Tianmu Mountain. According to legend, during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty (AD 627), Weichi Gong led troops to Sandun to dredge a tributary of Tiaoxi River to build a water conservancy project, and Chinese fir was connected with each other as a pontoon bridge, so it was called Shandun.

Sandun Town has a long history. It is said that during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period (22 BC1), Xunzi, a student of Confucius, visited Sandun and planted orchids by the river. He did good for the people, and in memory of him, he was named Li Lan. During the Xianfeng period, Li Xiucheng, the leader of the Taiping Army, rode to Sandun. The Taiping Army issued marriage registration certificates to Li Daming and Chai Damei in Qiantang, which is now in the Zhejiang Museum.

Sandun Town has pleasant natural scenery, and is known as "there are many flowers and trees on the pier, the river under the pier is connected, the stone bridge on the river is connected, and the four seasons are pleasant to live in". Sandun Town was founded before the Southern Song Dynasty, and the commercial handicraft industry has begun to take shape since the Qing Dynasty, and it is known as the "little shanghai". Sandun Lantern Festival has a long history. Among many lanterns, the dragon lantern is the boldest, the lion lantern is the most active, the fist lantern is the most powerful, the lantern is elegant in shape and has a strong local flavor.
