Li Tiangang was born in Shanghai, 1957.

He used to be a researcher at the Institute of History of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, assisting Mr. Tang Zhenchang to study the history of Shanghai. He has served as a visiting scholar at Matteo Ricci Institute of Chinese and Western Culture and History of the University of San Francisco, French Institute of Humanities, Harvard Yanjing Society, Department of Religious Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Intercultural Research Center of the City University of Hong Kong. He is also a researcher at Matteo Ricci Institute of Chinese and Western Culture and History of San Francisco University, Center of Religious and Contemporary China Society of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Institute of Chinese Christian Culture of Hong Kong, Intercultural Research Center of City University of Hong Kong, Institute of Modern History of Central China Normal University and Urban Culture Research Center of Shanghai Normal University.
