Chapter VI Parental Style

Three, one two three four five's father

The poem says:

Shi Jia was born in Tianzhu, and Prajna floated in the painting.

One ancestor crossed the ocean, and the other forbade it.

Three ancestors lived in seclusion, and four ancestors collected disciples.

Five ancestors opened the altar and six ancestors had an epiphany.

The mirror is not a stage, and the bodhi has no trees.

The North School attaches importance to practice, while the South School concentrates on culture.

The green hills are fragrant, and the ancient temples are Buddha's light.

The world has its own heart, and paramita has its own reason.

The poem only says that the Buddha has blossomed and taught others to tell others. The founder of Dharma came to China from the East, opened his school and inherited the mantle. Through the management of the second ancestor Hui Ke, the third ancestor Sangshen, the fourth ancestor Daoxin and the fifth ancestor Hongren, Zen has achieved unprecedented development in China, and the sixth ancestor Huineng raised the concept of "Zen" to a new height with superhuman understanding.

Anyway, the last article said that Dharma came to northern China to preach. With his unique Zen "wall view", countless monks and Buddhist enthusiasts came to study. One of the most famous is Hui Ke, the second ancestor of Zen Buddhism.

His real name is from Wulong, Henan Province, and the layman's surname is Ji. Shen Guang has read many poems since he was a child, but he has little interest in Confucian fame. He just likes to travel around and be free. It is considered appropriate to travel frequently between Yichuan and Luoyang at a young age. Perhaps, in that turbulent era, you can really be like the Wei and Jin celebrities in the previous dynasty, and you can send your feelings to the mountains and rivers and get an ideal life.

Later, Shen Guang became a monk in Xiangshan, Longmen, Luoyang, and was ordained in Yongmu Temple. Since then, I have been more free in body and mind, seeking dharma everywhere and learning Mahayana and Hinayana Buddhism. However, after years of hard study, Shen Guang always felt that he didn't get anything really useful, and his heart was always restless. Under the guidance of the former master Bao Jing, I went to Songshan to find the founder of Dharma.

When Shen Guang asked Dharma, Dharma was practicing on the side wall. Living in the Central Plains for a long time, finding a suitable successor has always been a heart disease for the founder of Dharma. It is important to preach the law, and we should not neglect it. The "criteria for selecting apprentices" are quite strict, and monks with insufficient conduct, knowledge and understanding must never be entrusted with heavy responsibilities. Dharma didn't care about the arrival of the divine light at first, but just sat quietly every day without saying a word to the young monk.

However, Shen Guang, a stubborn man, waited for the Dharma Wall outside the cave all day, saying that he could not preach Dharma and vowed not to leave.

On a snowy night, Shen Guang stood motionless in the snow until it flooded his knees. Perseverance cannot but impress people. Dharma finally asked, "What do you want to do after standing in the snow for a long time?"

Seeing the divine light, of course, we should seize the opportunity and quickly ask Buddhism to teach Buddhism. Dharma then said a words:

It is difficult to practice Buddhism. You have to do what ordinary people can't do and endure what ordinary people can't do.

Shen Guang knew that Dharma was testing himself. When he gritted his teeth, he pulled out a knife from nowhere and broke his arm with a swish! This madness has always been a hot topic. Is it worth breaking your arm for the law? However, after all, such an idiotic behavior happened, and its belief was fully demonstrated in the resolute action of wielding a knife. Finally moved the founder. Dharma said: "When Buddhas first sought the Tao, they were led by the Dharma. Now that you have broken your arm in front of me, you can seek it. " It's really rare to be carried away by the law. From then on, Shen Guang changed its name to Hui Ke and learned from Dharma.

Hui Ke once asked the founder of Dharma for advice: "My heart is uneasy, begging for a teacher and peace." Said my heart had been restless. Please give me a reassuring method!

Dharma asked, "Kindness to you." You bring your heart, and I will give you peace. Hui Ke suddenly froze. This broken arm is ok, but the heart can't be taken out. Besides, this "heart" is not another "heart", and the intangible "heart" can't be found. I can only shake my head to the teacher to show that I can't accept it Dharma said, "I feel at ease for you." Well, if you can't take it out, what can you install? Hui Ke understood and suddenly realized: "If you find your heart, you can't get it." No real heart can be obtained, and no real "anxiety" can be settled.

After inheriting the mantle, Hui Ke, as the second ancestor, began the journey of "preaching with peace of mind".

The second ancestor broke the routine and often taught Buddhism properly in the market, which violated the rules that Buddhism had to be taught on solemn occasions at that time, so the Zen method of the second ancestor was once called "magic". However, "magic" has its own magic. With the spread of the second ancestor's practice, it still shines and attracts more people's attention.

Once, the second ancestor met a monk who was still in his forties and made the monk realize that there was no difference between heart and Buddha, heart and dharma, and Buddha and dharma, and the third ancestor appeared.

The life of Sanzu Sangshen is little known, and it is straightforward enough in "Five Lights and Huiyuan": "I don't know who the owner of Sanzu Sangshen is." The reason here is related to the low-key way of doing things of the three families. He lived in seclusion in the mountains for more than ten years. According to the Record of Passing Lights, the three ancestors "hid in Wangong Mountain, which belonged to the Emperor Wu of the Later Zhou Dynasty (Northern Zhou Dynasty) who destroyed the Buddha. He studied in Sikong Mountain, Taihu County, and lived in uncertainty for more than ten years. It seems that this low-key Sanzu is hiding his strength and has just escaped the "extinction law"

Until he met a 14-year-old little monk, he believed that the big monk could "return to the rivers and lakes" and start preaching and teaching. It is said that the letter is to "seek liberation". When Sanzu saw this little novice monk, he was very appreciative. The young man can ask questions on his own initiative, which proves that he is motivated. As the Book of Changes also said, "I want to be a child, and the child wants me." Enlightenment education is best carried out on the basis of the educated's initiative to ask for advice. So Sanzu said to the little novice monk seriously, "Nobody tied you up, what else do you want?" Tao Xin is also very savvy, and he immediately understood that "all troubles and karma are originally empty." Yes, this little novice monk later believed that he was the fourth ancestor.

The fourth ancestor, Daoxin, was born in Yongning (now Wuxue City, Hubei Province) during the reign of Emperor Yangdi, and his father was a county magistrate of Yongning County. Daoxin began to study at the age of four and was famous for his cleverness. The clever county magistrate's son liked Buddhist etiquette since he was a child, and made up his mind to become a monk at the age of seven. His father Sima Shen was helpless.

Different from the low-key of the three ancestors, the four schools successively opened altars in Jizhou Temple and Shuangfeng Mountain to accept disciples, and Zen began to flourish. Not only many Buddhist monks (including Silla monks who came to China) began to learn Zen, but also officials and scholars from the secular world came to visit and study.

By the time the four ancestral laws were passed, the emperor was already the famous Emperor Taizong. When Emperor Taizong heard the names of the four ancestors, he called them into the palace to give lectures, but they refused to enter the palace, and even held a knife to face the envoys sent by Emperor Taizong. The messenger was naturally frightened and hurried back to report to Taizong. Emperor Taizong had no choice but to "give purple clothes to fulfill his ambition." Sure enough, everyone has his own ideas, and the owner of this letter is also opinionated. He chose his own way of teaching, just as he resolutely chose to become a monk. He doesn't want to be pushed around, and he doesn't want to seek fame and fame like a secular monk.

The fourth ancestor once accepted a seven-year-old boy as a disciple. This little boy has no record of a layman's surname, but there is a "legendary story" in "Five Lights Meeting Yuan". The story says that there was a "Taoist" who was very old. In order to get the news of his fourth ancestor, he was reincarnated into the belly of a woman in Zhou. The woman got pregnant before marriage and gave birth to a "nameless son" without a surname. Regardless of the magic here, it is really wise to say that this "no surname". The fourth ancestor saw this "no surname" at first sight and asked, "What's your surname?" The seven-year-old boy actually answered "Buddha nature", and the fourth ancestor was both surprised and happy. It is rare that this child knew "Buddha" at an early age, and immediately accepted him as a disciple, giving him the dharma name Hongren, the fifth ancestor of Zen Buddhism.

The fifth ancestor was magnanimous and gentle. After he inherited the mantle, he established a Dojo in Dongshan Temple, Huangmei, which was widely attended by believers. Under his management, Zen became more famous.

The five ancestors of Zen have different experiences. Dharma travels across the ocean to preach Buddhism. Hui Ke is determined to seek Taoism at the expense of his broken arm. The monk and the young lady kept a low profile, believed in Taoism all their lives and worked hard. They seek understanding, peace of mind and liberation, and work tirelessly, showing us the glorious life of faith.

"Ancestors 12345, disciples 100 million." The rise of Zen Buddhism has brought infinite enlightenment.
