Lonchura striata, a white-waisted wenbird, is commonly known as the white-backed wenbird, the pointed-tailed wenbird, the ten sisters, the white-waisted fortune-telling bird and the five grains.

It is a small bird with a body length of 10- 12 cm. The upper body is reddish brown or dark sandy brown with white feather lines, the waist is white, the tail is covered with chestnut brown, the forehead, mouth base, eye head, chin and throat are dark brown, the neck and upper chest are chestnut yellow with pale yellow feather lines and feather edges, the lower chest and abdomen are nearly white, and each feather has a "U" shape. Similar species of spotted birds have different waists and feathers. Habitat in low mountains, hills and hilly plains below1500m above sea level.

Sexual gregarious, except for the activities in pairs during the breeding season, there are many gregarious activities in other seasons, often several or more than 10 together, and dozens or even hundreds of large groups are more common in autumn and winter. Groups are closely combined and often crowd together when flying or resting.
