Lingao dialect belongs to Zhuang-Dong language family of Sino-Tibetan language family.

With regard to the origin of Lingao people, the basic consensus in academic circles is that it is generally believed that Lingao people's ancestors crossed the sea from Guangdong and Guangxi in southern China to Hainan Island through Qiongzhou Strait 2,500 years ago and settled in the northeast of Hainan Island, later than the ancestors of Li nationality and earlier than those of Han nationality. Scholars' research shows that Lingao people and Zhuang-Dai languages (Thai, Lao, Zhuang, Shan, Buyi, Dai-Nong and Dai) have the same language, which may be the same as the Zhuang-Dai languages of Baiyue nationality in ancient south China.
