Zhanjiang has a long history, profound cultural heritage and rich traditional cultural resources.

In recent years, Zhanjiang City has vigorously promoted the construction of a culturally strong city in light of local conditions, especially after the tenth Party Congress of the province explicitly proposed to speed up the construction of towns in western Guangdong with Zhanjiang as the center. Zhanjiang City has intensified its cultural construction, excavated, integrated, protected and utilized historical and cultural resources with national traditions and regional characteristics, made great efforts to build a cultural brand with local characteristics in Zhanjiang, and vigorously built a cultural center in western Guangdong.

In 2005, Zhanjiang City began to select more than 80 cultural positions and facilities, cultural relics, ancient dwellings, ancient villages, characteristic cultural villages, ecological civilization villages, ecological landscapes, tourist attractions and urban cultural highlights along China 325 and 207 national highway, and connected these cultural resources and cultural highlights like pearls to build a "Southern Xinjiang Cultural Corridor". In Zhanjiang's long cultural history, this is undoubtedly a bold pioneering work, which has been reported by many domestic media.

After building this cultural corridor across Leizhou Peninsula, Zhanjiang City increased investment, constantly improved and enriched the cultural connotations of various scenic spots, and carefully designed the "Zhanjiang Cultural Tour". The cultural tour takes Zhanjiang as the center and is radial, forming three lines: north, south and west. Northern line: from downtown to Wuchuan, southern line: from downtown to Leizhou and xuwen county, and western line: from downtown to Suixi and Lianjiang. The third line covers the whole city of Zhanjiang, effectively combining culture with tourism and promoting cultural and economic development.

There are more than 120 kinds of folk arts in Zhanjiang, and there are more than 30 kinds of performing arts, which are very rich in folk art resources. In recent years, through in-depth excavation and continuous innovation, a number of outstanding folk arts such as Suixi lion dance, Wuchuan floating color and East Island dragon dance have been cultivated and reproduced. Among them, lion dance, a traditional performing art, is gradually moving towards the whole country and the world. Suixi County, the hometown of lion dance in China, enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad, and has won numerous honors in recent years. In 2003, at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture, Wencheng Lion Dance Company of this county participated in the "Sino-French Culture Year" of that year, and set a Guinness World Record with a performance of 3.6 meters. In 2006, he won the "Mountain Flower Award", the highest prize of China folk art, and the 7th Luxun Literature and Art Award. In 2004, the Xu Wu Lion Dance Troupe of this county was invited to participate in the Shanghai International Culture Festival.

Zhanjiang is rich in cultural heritage, with "Zhanjiang Lion Dance" and "East Island Dragon Dance" included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists, "Leizhou Stone Dog" included in the first batch of national folk cultural protection projects in China, and six projects including Leizhou Stone Dog, Leizhou Girl Song, Wuchuan Piaose, Suixi Lion Dance, East Island Dragon Dance and Lianjiang Eagle Dance included in the representative list of Guangdong intangible cultural heritage. In 2005, Zhanjiang City successfully held the Zhanjiang Red Clay Culture and Art Festival, and more than 3,000 peasant actors participated in 90 performances, which fully demonstrated the elegance of Zhanjiang folk art.

The Central Plains culture and Leizhou local culture have stirred and blended here, enriching the cultural accumulation of Leizhou Peninsula and creating many historical and cultural celebrities, such as Xie Chen and Chen Changqi of Leizhou City, Lin Zhaotang of Wuchuan City (the top scholar in Qing Dynasty) and Chen Lanbin, the first ambassador of China to the United States. In 2004, in order to encourage Zhanjiang people to carry forward the past and carry forward the red soil culture, Zhanjiang launched the selection activities of "Top Ten Historical and Cultural Celebrities in Zhanjiang City" and "Top Ten Contemporary Cultural Celebrities in Zhanjiang City", excavated and protected the celebrity cultures such as Xie Chen, and restored the former residence of Xie Chen, the former residence of Chen Lanbin and the memorial hall of Lin Zhaotang. Over the past few years, after excavation and protection, Zhanjiang City has rescued a number of cultural relics and created a batch of villages with aliases. Leizhou is named as the only famous national historical and cultural city in western Guangdong, Wuyang Town in Wuchuan is named as a famous national historical and cultural town, Chaoxi Village and Lindong Village in Leizhou are named as famous national historical and cultural villages, and Bangtang Village is named as the oldest village in China. Xuwen county founded the "China Folk Photography Base", and Li Jianhua, a farmer from Leizhou, founded the largest Couplet Art Museum in China-Xialan North Couplet Art Museum.
