The project started in February 1960. In June of that year 10, due to natural disasters and national economic difficulties, the superior decided to stop the work of Hongqi Canal, and the farmers saved themselves, so the main canal was forced to stop work. In order to introduce the Zhanghe River water into Linxian County as soon as possible, the cadres and masses of canal construction put forward that "it is better to fight hard than to suffer hardships", selected 300 young people to form a commando team, and insisted on carrying on the construction with their leaders behind their backs. When the leader came to inspect, he hid, and the leader left to continue the construction. At that time, there were only six Liang of food per person every day. In order to fill their stomachs, they went up the mountain to dig wild vegetables and fish for river grass to satisfy their hunger. Many people got edema and insisted on fighting on the construction site. In the spirit of moving mountains, they dig mountains all day. They created blasting methods such as "serial gun", "triangle gun" and "crock kiln gun", which increased the daily footage of mountain digging to more than 2 meters. After a year and five months of fighting, the tunnel was finally drilled at1July 5 196 1, and the key project of Hongqi Canal construction was completed.

To commemorate the hard work of young people, this cave was named "Youth Cave". 1973, Guo Moruo, vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC), personally wrote the name of the cave.
