What are the customs of the Dai people?

Dai customs include marriage customs and funeral customs.

1, marriage customs

When young Dai men and women get married, they generally practice the custom of living from the wife's house, that is, the man goes to the woman's house, so the wedding is mainly held in the woman's house. Before the wedding, the bride and groom will go to the Buddhist temple to worship Buddha and pray for good luck and happiness and grow old together. Next is the wedding ceremony, tie ceremony, banquet, singing and other processes. At dawn the next day, the groom will return to his parents' home and his wife's home at night.

After marriage, the man usually lives in the woman's house for three years, and then he can take his wife back to the man's house. After living in the man's house for three years, you can return to the woman's house. This is called "three years to go, three years to come". It was not until the couple built their own houses and became financially independent that they left their parents and set up their own small family.

2. Funeral customs

In Dai villages, when a person dies, different funeral ceremonies should be taken according to the age, identity and cause of death of the deceased. There are four funeral methods: cremation, burial and water burial. Cremation is a long-standing funeral custom in Xishuangbanna.

After the death of Buddha, master, monk and venerable person, cremation is often used; Burial is the main way of funeral for Dai people in Xishuangbanna. In the past, Xishuangbanna people living in Linjiang once had the custom of water burial. Whether it is death or sudden death, it is buried with water and has gradually abandoned. It is to take a ceremony at the request of a very few people before life to let their souls enter heaven.

Introduction of Dai traditional festivals;

1, Songkran Festival

It was held on 10 day after Tomb-Sweeping Day, symbolizing "the best day". Festivals usually last for three days. Two days ago, it was to send the old and welcome the new. In the early morning of the festival, men, women and children in Dai villages bathed in costumes, went to the Buddhist temple to worship Buddha, and built 4 or 5 towers in the temple. Everyone sat around the tower and listened to the Buddha chanting. After that, the women each picked a handful of water to "welcome the dust" for the Buddha statue. After the ceremony in the Buddhist temple, the young men and women quit and poured water on each other to bless them. Then they marched around in groups and threw water at pedestrians to show their blessing.

2. Flower Street Festival

On this day, thousands of young men and women gathered in Flower Street from the surrounding villages. The flower street of the festival is very lively, and little girls (girls) dressed in ancient costumes line up and walk slowly through the flower street, competing for each other and having unlimited amorous feelings; Boys are looking for the right person, keep your eyes open.

It hit it off, and the two met in the lychee bushes under the phoenix bamboo. The girl untied the rice from her waist and turned over the green banana leaves. I saw that the fragrant glutinous rice was dyed half golden and half bright red by the flower juice, and the banana leaves were filled with rare delicacies such as pork loin, fried eel dried fish and salted duck eggs layer by layer. Two people eat together and talk about sweet words. After dinner, the big proposal is settled.
