Legalists believe in strength in addition to interests. The so-called "strength makes strength, strength makes strength, and strength makes virtue". Legalists believe that power does have the power to make people submit and obey, and human behavior can only be changed by coercion. In the eyes of legalists, nothing can be really reliable except strength. In addition, legalists also emphasize competition. Legalists believe that the essence of this society is competition, which means the law of the jungle. For what? Strive for benefits. With what? By strength.
Obviously, compared with Confucianism, Legalism is very realistic. Showing the essence of society in front of people, on the one hand, gave Zeng Guofan Confucian ideals. But his ideal is no longer idealism, which makes Zeng Guofan see deep-seated interests through superficial tenderness and have a clearer understanding of the world, so as to achieve the so-called "everyone knows what he looks like", which is undoubtedly the key factor for him to remain sober and conscious in the process of being an official.
But legalists also have their own shortcomings. What is the biggest problem of legalists? Is too strong, too cold, too overbearing, too mean, too natural, too self. So brave, overbearing and spontaneous, it will certainly cause hostility and confrontation from others. Therefore, when Zeng Guofan led the troops in Hunan and Jiangxi, he fell into extremely tense interpersonal relationships. Wherever he went, he was constantly in conflict with the officialdom, so that he was "incompatible with the whole country." In the end, the emperor removed the military power and was forced to go home to guard the system. Zeng Guofan fell to the lowest valley of his life.
Even he himself lamented: alas! The rainbow penetrates Jing Qing's heart, and everyone who sees it thinks it is trivial and thin; Bi Hua Changhong's blood, the viewer thought it was a stone and abandoned it.
When a generation of saints fall into such a dilemma, how will we evaluate it? We praise his perseverance of "knocking out teeth and swallowing blood", and we will also praise another sentence: "Those who have achieved great things in ancient times are not only outstanding talents, but also have perseverance."
When we encounter such adversity, we are also used to using the experiences of these awesome people to motivate ourselves.
However, the opposite of adversity is often in the heart.
If the heart is uneven and the spirit is not smooth, it is easy to be enemies with the outside world.
The devil first succumbs to his own heart, and when his heart degenerates, the demons retreat; Those who control the balance should control this gas first, and the gas level will not invade the outside.
When Zeng Guofan came out of the mountain again in the eighth year of Xianfeng, his style of dealing with people began to blend with Huang Lao's Taoist thought of inaction, which can be seen in his diary: "After reading Liu Wenqing's Ai Qing Tang Tie, I was slightly interested in its nature, and I realized that there are two wonderful places in literati skills, one is magnificent, and the other is long. It was this change that reversed Zeng Guofan's later life and changed the historical pattern and trend.
I have to say that Zeng Guofan, regarded as the "most persistent" by later generations, is actually a very flexible person.
Stick to your inner ideal, but your behavior will change with the external environment and situation. As a master of Neo-Confucianism, Zeng Guofan's behavior is getting closer and closer to Wang Yangming, a master of psychology.
