Plot introduction

In the swamps and valleys of southern Louisiana, there is still an ancient culture unknown to outsiders among the local residents, and religious ceremonies and customs about this culture are also continuing. For those who don't understand this religious culture, these are incredible and even ridiculous. However, for those who believe in it after experiencing darkness and terror, its evil power is real, and its energy is powerful ... even fatal.

Once you believe in its power, all your fears will come true.

Caroline Ellis (kate hudson), a 25-year-old girl, is a strong-willed young girl. During her time as a rock band manager, she was busy with her work and neglected her dying father, so as to make up for her past treatment of her father and comfort her mind. Caroline got a job: an old woman hired her to take care of her sick and weak husband. The couple are the owners of an old house. It takes more than an hour to drive from New Orleans to the Louisiana Triangle where the house is located-this area is famous for its mysterious customs and religious ceremonies. This shabby big house is the home of violette and Ben Desfri Oaks (Gina Roland and john hurt), who are both southerners. Both this big old house and its owner seem to bear a mysterious and gloomy history. Gradually, apart from taking good care of Ben who was paralyzed in bed, Caroline became suspicious of violette and the house.

By chance, Caroline got a master key from violette, with which she could open all the rooms in the building-except the room hidden on the top floor that Caroline noticed. Caroline couldn't resist her curiosity and walked into the room. Here, she found hair, bones, blood, spells and other equipment obviously used by witchcraft. Violette claimed that she had never been to that room, but Caroline could clearly feel that violette was the one who practiced witchcraft in that room, and her husband Ben's illness was caused by these witchcraft.

Mysterious things happen one after another, and Caroline is determined to uncover these secrets, get rid of witchcraft and save Ben from the pain. Will the master key in her hand bring Caroline luck or evil?

Watch this: the screenwriter of the American version of "The Ring of Midnight"+the director of K-Star Alien.

Witchcraft and weirdness are not a short history in the marginal mountainous areas of Louisiana. It is indeed a good place to choose this place with a history of witchcraft to explore the ancient houses in the film. However, anyone familiar with Hollywood horror thrillers knows that big houses in places where birds don't shit are definitely good places for terror, because they are remote and dense, let alone asking for help. After opening a secret attic door, the nightmare will come true, and those horrible secrets will be displayed in front of the protagonist. ...

Although the film sounds like any horror thriller on the Hollywood assembly line, the addition of the screenwriter of "American version of Midnight Ring" and the director of "Alien K" adds a lot of mystery to the film. The master key is similar to a spell, because it is a single young girl who went to a strange house, took care of a sick old man and found something puzzling. But unlike the power of ghosts and gods in mantras, the master key relies on the ability of mysterious religion and witchcraft, which seems more powerful for almost all people who have believed in Christ since childhood!

American new love monologue horror drama

Although there are infinite secrets hidden in the southern Gothic-style witchcraft house, the key to truly controlling the overall situation-the person in charge of the master key, the curious baby who almost died because of curiosity, is definitely the absolute focus of the film, and this curious female nurse is the new head of Hollywood Colette, although she is young. This sweetheart, as sweet as Dove chocolate at first glance, has always been the darling of the audience. Although the box office blockbusters "Ten Days Lost" and "Pop Godmother" are not commercial blockbusters, they are still loved by a large number of people, which shows her sweetheart status. However, unlike her predecessor, Collette meg ryan, who can only be accepted as a comedy and romantic movie by the audience, young Hudson turned to seek a breakthrough as soon as she became a mother. This film is Hudson's first horror exploration, and it is also her first time to play the leading role in a drama.

Maybe thriller movies are really the breakthrough of beauty, or how many actresses, such as Nicole Kidman and naomi watts, are willing to star in such movies, and Xiu Xiu screams herself? Apart from its other advantages, the leading role of girls is usually the absolute leading role. From left to right, from top to bottom, she almost never misses taking a shower and sleeping. Hudson appeared in every shot. Although the supporting role is equally powerful, no one can steal your shot. Why not? Mottled shady trees, dark ponds, overgrown gardens, peeling paint, creaking doors and sudden thunderstorms add to the sudden strange sounds, stylized shearing and a glimpse of mysterious voodoo magic when we are completely relaxed. At the same time, the script of Kruger, the screenwriter of the American version of The Ring of Midnight, has brought the strange atmosphere to the extreme, so that even if we don't believe in these so-called witchcraft at all, we are still scared to death!

film review

The structure of this film is still very good, mainly around three themes: redemption, belief is spiritual, unbelief is invalid, and sacrifice. And at the end, I played a flower job, which gave people a feeling of sighing.

First, redemption:

As the saying goes: "Children have to support their parents, but their relatives are away", which means that when their parents are alive, they cannot honor and serve their parents because of time, ability or other reasons. When children have time, ability or want to honor their parents, they cannot realize their wishes because of their parents' death.

Caroline in this film is such a nurse who wants to support her son but is not close. Because the band that helped friends was criticized by my father for wasting time, my father and daughter didn't talk. She didn't know her father's illness until his death. She didn't take care of her father because of time or financial ability, but because she did something that her father didn't approve of when she had time and ability to take care of her father, and his father didn't approve of her, which made her psychologically resist, deliberately ignoring her father and ignoring his existence. So, in order to free herself from self-condemnation, she chose a nurse, and it was a job dedicated to caring for the dying elderly. In her heart, she has been deeply sorry for her father, and she wants to get spiritual salvation through this work. The reason why she is more enthusiastic and kind to dying elderly patients than other nurses is that she not only takes care of terminally ill patients and lets them die peacefully, but also tries her best to make them recover, largely to make up for her past mistakes. But because it took a long time, over time, sympathy for such patients became an emotion. At this moment, the simple purpose of the past gradually became noble. Therefore, it is no longer just a job for her to take care of advanced elderly patients in the future.

But in this movie, the theme of redemption is just an introduction, just a reason for her to go to her home to take care of Ben in the future. It's a pity that the film didn't make much fuss about it. Only later, when Caroline felt a little overwhelmed and wanted to give up the purpose of making Ben recover, when she glanced at the helpless Ben and the photo of her and her father outside the window, the theme of redemption appeared again, which supported Caroline to continue her faith. It can be said that although this theme does not appear many times, it is of great significance every time.

Second, faith is spirit, and unbelief is invalid:

Hehe, this sentence seems to be true on the surface, but it is not true after all. Imagine that no one is born a believer; Everyone came into this world naked: no thought, no consciousness, no fear; Yes, it's just an uncut chaotic state What influence does the acquired environment have on him (her), what kind of beliefs he (she) will form. The so-called belief refers to the extreme belief and respect for a person, a certain idea, a doctrine, a religion or God, as an example or a tutorial for one's own actions. In other words, belief is a person's choice and holding of his outlook on life, values and world outlook.

Faith can easily become superstition.

It can be said that everyone is born an atheist and has no faith at all. There will be no faith unless the dog is desperate or has no way out. Who wants to believe in any other god or doctrine except himself, if given the chance, but if he can solve the problem by himself? But the environment is stronger than people, and you will always meet with helplessness; And this time, that is, when you are most vulnerable. At the most vulnerable time, a person is willing to accept any theory or doctrine that he or she has never been exposed to or even tired of before, as long as it can help him or her solve practical problems.

Caroline in this film is such a person. She is not superstitious. She doesn't believe in the drug calling religion that existed in the southern United States for a long time. The most fundamental feature of this teaching is that if you don't believe it, it won't do you any harm. In a word, faith is spiritual, and unbelief is invalid. But Caroline, who claims to be willing to accept all kinds of opinions and knowledge, can't help believing in the face of extreme fear and great life threat, whether she likes it or not; She tried to seduce Violet by calling poison and scattering brick fragments at the door of the house, and even tried to avoid the harm of Violet and Luke in this way. But when she followed Violet's lost spell and laid a pattern in the attic with chalk and other materials that she thought could protect herself, she fell into the trap of Violet. No, it should be said that it was Cercel: Caroline fully believed in this religion of calling poison. Although she tried to control her consciousness and fight against her illusion, Caroline, who believed everything in sight, was knocked down by Cercel and attached to herself.

In fact, it was originally for the purpose of "one who has to tie the bell to solve the problem" that Caroline turned to the master who summoned the poison to help Ben who was psychologically forced to agree because of her belief in the doctrine and really thought that she had a stroke under the control of drugs. But after watching this film, I remembered it again. It was Caroline's kindness that finally led her to the abyss of faith and led to the final outcome, right? This idea makes people feel scared: good intentions are not rewarded!

It doesn't really matter whether the beliefs you believe exist or not. The important thing is that you think it exists and believe that its existence is the ultimate expression of the film.

Third, sacrifice:

The witchcraft in this film is mainly embodied by two servants Sessel and Justifi who died 90 years ago. Justifi's most important contribution is undoubtedly the discovery of the "sacrifice curse", whose main content is: if you sacrifice others, you will have the rest of the victim's life.

Ha ha, sacrifice, which has always been a positive image and heroic behavior, has completely turned into such a strange logic here, because it is reasonable to take unfair actions to deprive others of their lives in order to continue their own lives. Moreover, under the deduction of Jasper and Cercel, there is a tendency to become a false truth of "Every man for himself, and the devil takes the hindmost".

Fourth, the ending:

Judging from the ending of this film, it is obvious that both the writer and the director have spent a certain amount of effort: Caroline, knocked down by her own illusion and the big mirror pushed by the violet possessed by Cercel, got up slowly, lit a cigarette with a little hesitation and a little strangeness, and said a creepy sentence gracefully and slowly: Yes, son ... Then, lawyer Luke came in. It turned out that Sessel attached Caroline to Violet, and Justin's law was always attached to Luke. And they always thought that Caroline attached to Cercel this time was not only Bellevue Ritter, but even better than Sethe's own figure. Seeing this, I am a little dumbfounded. When they do evil, they are so self-righteous and even a little elegant. Although it doesn't conform to the routine of the final victory of good and evil, such a treatment seems to be easier for people to agree and think it is the most reasonable result. Generally speaking, the arrangement of this ending is wonderful and shocking. It is a bit of a finishing touch, which makes the whole drama reach an evil climax in peace.

Of course, the writers and directors handled this way in order to find a more reasonable explanation for Justifi and Sessel's persistent evil, or to leave a foreshadowing for a sequel. But there is no doubt that the result of this reversal is a bit unacceptable: evil will continue, and they will continue to find someone to sacrifice for possession.

Five, the last sentence:

Playing a scary movie that people think is a ghost is horrible and even gives people a sense of reasoning in solving crimes. Finally, a collection of stories about so-called ghost possession 90 years ago was added. This structure is indeed a bit ingenious elsewhere. Not too many children don't talk about strange gods and disorderly forces, but only about people's deep fears. Can create such an effect, and Caroline's actor kate hudson's efforts are inseparable. This sweet girl, who grew up in a family of performing artists and was well known by her parents, changed the sweet and lovely image in previous literary films and comedies, and vividly interpreted Caroline who was involved in sacrifice for redemption. She really has the demeanor of a future superstar. At the end of the film, Peter Sasjude, who plays Luke, suddenly shines: he was originally inconspicuous, and at the end he highlighted the evil and cruelty of justice, and his lawyer status and gentle behavior changed so suddenly that it was amazing.

Every door has a lock, but there is always a key to open all the doors. This is the master key, but the status of the master key in this film is obviously inconsistent with its status as the name of this film. In fact, this movie is all about Caroline, a nurse who doesn't do a good job as a detective, but because of her lack of experience in business, she is an ill-fated person. A story of ultimate sacrifice for redemption.
