Master Xingyun: What will you do in the future?
When I was a teenager, I often discussed with Taoist friends in groups of three or five: "What should I do in the future? 」
Someone said, "I want to write a book in the future and leave my name forever." 」
Someone said, "I want to be an abbot and lead the public in the future." 」
Someone said, "I will pass on the scriptures and pass on the Buddha in the future." 」
Some people say: "I will support the elderly and raise children in the future, and I will help the poor." 」
But I am always speechless, because I only remember that one year when I was suffering from malaria, I sent home half a bowl of pickles, and now I swear to become a monk in return. Since then, I have worked hard to practice and serve the monks, but I have never thought about what I will do in the future, because I dare not think about what I can do.
One day, my good friend Master Zhiyong asked me in a caring tone: "Tell me about it! What are you going to do in the future? 」
I replied, "I will know what I want to do in the future, but how can I know now?" 」
As soon as he heard it, he immediately blamed me: "You didn't make a wish, how can you succeed in the future?" 」
If I have learned anything, I will swear for myself, make progress gradually, swear for others, swear for Buddhism and swear for all beings. Along the way, I finally understand that the power of will is incredible, and the heart can expand our life and sublimate our realm.
May it be born from the heart, and may it be "from the heart". The most precious energy in the world, the most extraordinary wealth, is not underground, not in the deep sea, not in the bank, not in the wallet, but in our hearts. "Heart" is like a field, like a ground. Farmland must be developed for sowing, farming and harvesting; Land must be developed before buildings and enterprises can be built. Our hearts and minds must also be "developed" in order to have unlimited functions. For example, we have compassion in our hearts. If we can "make a wish" to develop compassion, we can treat people like me without regrets. We have wisdom in our hearts. If we can develop it with our hearts and minds, we can go deep into the sea of law and benefit others. If you have shame in your heart, if you can "make a wish" to develop, you can be open-minded and make continuous progress; There is joy in your heart. If you can "make a wish" to develop, you can benefit all beings and never look back. Even if we "have the heart" to eat, we can eat enough; Sleep "heartily" so that we can sleep soundly; You can walk for a long time with your heart; When we make up our minds, we can work hard. Everything in life depends on "making a wish" to make progress and complete it successfully.
Before I was twenty years old, I crawled in the Buddhist temple where cigarettes curled up like ordinary people and prayed devoutly:
Compassion Buddha! Mercy and compassion avalokitesvara! Please bless,
Give me compassion so that I can quench my greed;
Give me wisdom and let me get rid of ignorance;
Give me courage to break through all difficulties;
Give me strength to learn Buddhism and seek Tao smoothly.
I pray like this every day after studying at night. I think it's natural to pray like this. But after I was twenty years old, I graduated from the Buddhist College, and suddenly an idea flashed into my mind: I beg this and that from the Bodhisattva every day. Isn't it selfish for myself? If every Buddhist disciple is as insatiable as I am, aren't all buddhas and bodhisattvas busy meeting our needs? Since then, whenever various merits such as chanting and giving lectures are completed, the content of my prayer has changed:
Compassion Buddha! Mercy and compassion avalokitesvara!
Please bless my parents and teachers,
Let them live longer;
Please bless my friends and relatives,
Let them be safe and auspicious;
Please bless my destiny,
Let their careers be smooth sailing;
Please bless all merits and protect the law.
Make them rich and smart.
The Buddha bowed his head and smiled as if praising my progress. I feel at ease, because I no longer pray for myself, but for others.
However, from the age of twenty, I began a tortuous and changeable life. First, he followed Master Taixu's Buddhist innovation thought and risked his life to try to rectify the temple, which failed. Therefore, in his lifetime, he must try his best to revive Buddhism in China, and later he did. So, I once again "vowed" to "open all doors" in the future, build a temple to accommodate monks, and accept ten sides. The result is "all my wishes come true". In view of the difficulty in understanding Buddhist books at that time, I sincerely wrote the Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha to express the life of the Buddha in a literary way. Probably because I stayed up late writing and often coughed, thinking that I had lung disease, so I prayed to the Buddha every day. On the one hand, I hope to finish the Buddhist biography and let me die. On the other hand, I "vowed" to write the Buddha as a humanized and humanized supreme feeling. More than a year later, this book was published smoothly, and I also inspired infinite confidence from worshipping Buddha. Every day, I seem to wander in the compassion of the Buddha and get in touch with the Buddha. I've been in prison twice. On one occasion, the * * * production party mistook me for a national spy, and on another occasion, the Kuomintang mistook me for a spy. After I survived, I felt that my life was impermanent, so I made a wish to dedicate the Buddhism I witnessed to the public. Therefore, I preach Buddhism everywhere, and I am happy to talk about it. Even after setbacks and serious illness, I never gave up.
In this way, after I slowly reached the age of forty, one day, I looked at myself and got a point: all my prayers in the past were selfish and worse than the law! Because all the objects I seek the protection of Buddha and Bodhisattva revolve around the word "I", which is still a selfish greed. From the age of forty to fifty, I made a breakthrough in my prayer:
Compassion Buddha! Mercy and compassion avalokitesvara!
Pray that you will bring peace to the world,
Pray that you can bring prosperity to your country,
Pray that you will bring happiness to society,
Pray for you to give karma to all beings.
Every time I read this prayer, I feel smug. I practice by going up one flight of stairs, because I am not praying for myself, nor for my relatives and believers, but practicing what Hua Yan Jing said, "May all beings be relieved of their pain and not seek happiness for themselves."
During the ten years from 40 to 50, during the establishment of Foguang Mountain, at the beginning of the mountain, I made an oath of "giving people confidence, joy, hope and convenience". With the support of my heart, whether it was the attack of flash floods or the crisis of financial difficulties, I didn't flinch and broke through many difficulties unconsciously. At that time, the world was cold. After the Republic of China withdrew from the United Nations, it broke off diplomatic relations with India, Japan, the United States and other countries. At one time, people were worried. I set up a Dojo in America, but I also encountered difficulties everywhere. With the wish of "Buddha's light shines and testimonies flow forever", I finally put up with humiliation and overcame all difficulties.
Time flies, and the experience in my heart changes from time to time. At the age of 50, I suddenly realized that learning Buddhism should follow the spirit of "suffering on behalf of the masses, but it is difficult to do it". Why do I always pray for buddhas and bodhisattvas to do this and that? So, after the age of 50, I began to confess to the buddhas and bodhisattvas:
Compassion Buddha! Mercy and compassion avalokitesvara!
Please let me bear the suffering of all beings in the world.
Please let me bear the human sentiment.
Please let me continue to practice the Buddha's mercy.
Please let me learn the teachings of the Buddha.
Looking back over the past 20 years, although I have had many operations, I have never stopped teaching Buddhism. I traveled around to mediate and finally let Buddhist representatives on both sides of the strait sit in the same conference hall for the first time to discuss the bill. I visited Chinese mainland and prayed for the peaceful reunification of the two sides of the strait and the well-being of all beings; I have communicated and coordinated many times, and persuaded the major virtues to hold three international altars in the places where India became a Buddhist, and to restore the system of the southern monks; I have worked tirelessly to set up Dojo and Buddhist Light Society on five continents in the world to realize the ideal that monks believe in equality and prosperity of Buddhism. Introspection at night: Without my blessing and will, how could this be done? So, when the famous painter Mr. Li Zijian drew some portraits for me and asked me for an inscription, I wrote without thinking:
With a heart full of compassion, I am like a boat without a boat.
Ask me what I have done in my life. The Buddha shines on five continents.
Master Sheng 'an once said: "When you enter the Tao, you need to go to the door, and your heart comes first;" It's urgent to practice. Make a wish first. If you wish to stand, all living beings will live, and if you wish to succeed, you will be a Buddhist. Since ancient times, all buddhas and bodhisattvas have achieved supreme bodhi with "wishes", such as the twelve wishes of the pharmacist Tathagata and the twelve wishes of Guanyin Bodhisattva, wishing to forgive and benefit the world. How great their compassion is. Because of this, I once changed the ten wishes of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva into modern spoken language as my "wish":
A Buddha, I would like to practice the respect of personality from now on;
Since I praise Buddha, I would like to practice language praise from now on;
I am willing to practice the charity of my heart from now on;
Four people repent their karma, and I would like to improve my practice behavior from now on;
Five with joy and merit, I would like to practice charity funding from now on;
Please turn to Falun Gong. I want to practice the spread of Buddhism from now on.
Seventh, invite the Buddha to live, and I would like to practice and protect the saints from now on;
Eight often believe in Buddhism, and I would like to follow the truth from now on;
Nine people obey all sentient beings, and I would like to practice the attention of public opinion from now on;
Ten people support each other, and I would like to practice my virtues from now on.
I imitated the forty-eight wishes of Amitabha and drew up forty-eight wishes for myself:
First: I would like to be a candle, burning myself and illuminating others;

Fourth and third: I am willing to be a pastoral, cultivate Xiu De, benefit the economy and be affectionate;
Fourth, fourth: I would like to be a jungle, always in control of all the laws, endless demand;
Fourth and fifth: I would like to be a gazebo, covered with compassion and convenient for pedestrians;
Forty-six: I am willing to be a palace and strategize for the benefit of all people;
Forty-seven: I would like to make a piece of firewood and a vessel for people to use;
Forty-eight: I am willing to be a bodhisattva, develop bodhicitta and preach Buddhism.
Years of practical experience have made me deeply feel that "wishing with your heart" is like the upgrading of students, and you should encourage yourself to make continuous progress. For example, the vows of Bodhisattva Dizang, from "surviving my dead mother's bitterness" to "I will never become a Buddha until the hell is empty", have passed the test of countless disasters; Maitreya Bodhisattva's heart has changed from "seeking fame and fortune, a wanderer's surname is home" to "giving birth to a nun and spreading all beings", which is also the result of how many monks only robbed spiritual promotion. But I spent more than a year, with a single wish, I gradually learned a little about human Buddhism; In terms of monastic achievements, comfort is just a little bit worse. It can be seen that life is a long marathon. Whoever can "make a big wish" and stick to it will win the final victory.
When I was a teenager, I often discussed with Taoist friends in groups of three or five: "What should I do in the future? Someone said, "I want to write a book in the future and leave my name forever." "Some people say," I want to be an abbot and lead the public in the future.
