It is suggested that Hubei should not have representative language because of its moderate geographical position (in other words, Hubei dialect cannot form its own system). But academically speaking, Hubei dialect should belong to the northern dialect family, most parts of Hubei belong to the mandarin area (southwest mandarin and Jianghuai mandarin), and only southeast Hubei belongs to the Gan dialect, although Hubei people are close to the south in their beliefs and living habits.

According to the classification of Atlas of China Language and Characters and Historical, Cultural and Geographical Studies in Hubei, Hubei dialect is divided into three areas, namely Southwest Mandarin, Jianghuai Mandarin and Gan dialect:

1. belongs to the southwest mandarin area of northern dialect: Wuhan, Jingzhou, Xiangfan, Shiyan, Yichang, Enshi, etc. And subdivided into:

(1) Wu (Han) Tian (Gate) piece: the area between Wuhan, Honghu, Tianmen and Jingshan.

Including Wuhan, Jingzhou, Jiangling, Jingshan, Tianmen, Xiantao, Hanchuan, Honghu and southern Jingmen.

(2) Chengdu-Chongqing (Sichuan) film: Jingmen, Wufeng and the west of Xuanen.

Including Enshi, Yichang, Xianfeng, Badong, Xuanen, Lichuan, Laifeng, Jianshi, Wufeng, Yuan 'an, Dangyang, Yidu, Zhijiang, Changyang, Zigui and Xingshan.

(3) Northern Hubei: the area between Yunxi, Fangxian, Zhongxiang, Suizhou and Qianjiang.

Including Xiangfan, Shiyan, Danjiangkou, Laohekou, Suizhou, Nanzhang, Gucheng, Zaoyang, Yicheng, Baokang, Yunxian, Yunxi, Zhushan, Zhuxi, Fangxian, Shennongjia, Zhongxiang, Qianjiang and northern Jingmen.

(4) Chang (De) He (Feng) film: including Shishou, Gongan, Songzi and Hefeng.

2. Huanggang, Xiaogan and Huangshi belong to Jianghuai mandarin area of northern dialect. Among them, there are "yellow (vicious) filial piety films" in Jianghuai Mandarin: Huanggang, Xiaogan, Luotian, Qichun, Huangpi, Luotian, Yingshan, Macheng, Xishui, Ezhou, Hong 'an, Guangshui, Anlu, Yingcheng, Huangmei, Wuxue and Yunmeng.

3. Tongcheng, Chibi, Chongyang, Tongshan, Yangxin, Xianning, Jiayu, Daye and Jianli belong to the Gan dialect area.
