Xiashan Catholic Church is the only Gothic church in Zhanjiang and one of the national key churches. The church in 1900 was proposed by French priest Lan Fan and was built in 1903. It was the largest Gothic church in southern China at that time.

There is a special plant in the church that has a history of 100 years-fork wood (also known as cross tree) has become a popular landscape. A forked tree usually has two leaves in a cluster, and each leaf looks like a cross-shaped frame that Christians hang on their chests. Flowers and fruits grow directly on the trunk or branches.
