Daily gossip, parents gossip, gossip ... we can't resist the temptation of gossip.

Gossip is something people often do. For example, if you complain to your friends about your dissatisfaction with others, and listen to others talk about their great colleagues and echo them, it is all gossip. In a study, a research team at the University of California, Riverside summarized some characteristics of people's gossip. Curiosity Daily introduced the research.

There were 467 participants in this study. They must wear portable radio equipment and randomly record what they say during the day. Then, the researchers will analyze these words and find out the gossip inside.

The research team sorted out about 4000 "gossip" and came to several interesting conclusions. The first conclusion is related to time. According to statistics, the average time spent by participants in the study is almost 52 minutes per day. Second, gossip is mainly used for information transmission, and only a few gossip is about the evaluation of praise and criticism. In the experiment, about three-quarters of the rumors are neutral information. However, in the remaining quarter of gossip, there are more negative gossip, twice as many as positive gossip. Third, acquaintances gossip is the majority, and celebrities gossip is less.

Then why is gossip so attractive?

First of all, gossip makes both sides trust each other and creates the possibility of cooperation. According to a study, gossip is a social skill and an important way for individuals to contact others. However, although gossip can establish connections, if your gossip is always criticizing others, the effect may be counterproductive.

Secondly, gossip is for self-protection and progress. The research team in university of groningen, the Netherlands, believes that we need to listen to other people's gossip, especially negative gossip, so as to avoid damaging our reputation and protect and improve ourselves. After we get the information, we will evaluate and reflect on ourselves, and if we have it, we will change it, and if we don't, we will encourage it.

Third, gossip makes people gain "social capital". Gossip can make you feel confident in front of others. "Even if you can't bear to use this information, having it can make people feel safe and satisfied with the information at hand."

Finally, gossip gives us a chance to determine what we really care about. Before you rush to tell others, you should think about the real purpose behind this gossip. For example, if you complain about a friend, you are actually complaining that the other person didn't keep the appointment and failed to live up to your cherished opportunity to get together.
