First, New Year.

Every household puts up Spring Festival couplets and wears new clothes, symbolizing the renewal of Vientiane. Early in the morning, the householder got up and set off fireworks. Women in charge go to nearby temples to burn incense and worship Buddha, while businessmen go to Jiafu Temple and Guoyuan to burn incense for good luck.

On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, all families eat "jiaozi" (or Yuanxiao). Children in rural areas should walk the streets and celebrate the New Year with gongs and drums. In the evening, firecrackers and fireworks will be set off in the streets and alleys of urban and rural areas, as well as lantern festivals and dragon dances.

Second, Dragon Boat Festival.

Every family should hang mugwort leaves, cattails and garlic on the gate, stick spells issued by Taoist priests, and hang Zhong Kui as a symbol to ward off evil spirits. Atractylodes lancea, Folium Artemisiae Argyi and Radix Angelicae Dahuricae are smoked indoors to repel insects and snakes. There are dragon boat races in both urban and rural areas.

Third, Mid-Autumn Festival.

Everyone eats moon cakes, water chestnuts, lotus roots, fried taro with sugar and wonton. Farmers steam cowpea cakes with glutinous rice and cowpeas, commonly known as turtle wheat cakes.

Fourth, Chongyang

Every family eats Chongyang cake and drinks chrysanthemum wine. Triangle bunting double ninth festival cakes are sold in the city. It is said that people climb mountains to avoid disaster. People in urban areas climb Yushan Mountain and enjoy autumn scenery. Many units in the city should organize gatherings for the elderly, celebrate festivals with the elderly and wish their elderly friends good health.
