In the 13th year of Tongzhi (1874), in order to build a railway from Yangon, Myanmar to Simao, Yunnan, British Colonel Braun led an armed reconnaissance team of nearly 200 people to set out from Myanmar to scout the route of China and Yunnan. Ma Jiali, a staff member of the British Embassy in China, also received an order from Minister Wade to meet him in Myanmar via Yunnan and prepare to meet Brown in Ba Maw at the end of the year. In the first month of the first year of Guangxu (1875), Ma Jiali and Bai Lang led an armed reconnaissance team to invade Yunnan, threatening to attack Tengyue City (now Tengchong).
