Why did the imperial daughter marry General Tokugawa Jiamao under the Palace Hall?

In 1960s and 1970s, in order to build a hotel and golf course near Zengshang Temple in Chicago, Tokyo, it was necessary to remove the tomb where General Tokugawa Shogunate and his wife were buried. When excavating the tomb of Kazuo Tokugawa (14 generation general's wife, daughter of Emperor Renxiao and sister of Emperor Xiaoming), I found her holding a string of beads in her left hand and a glass plate in her right hand. The glass plate is a photo of that era, but it disappears at the sight of air and sunshine. Only after scientific treatment can Jiamao's faint face be revealed. Originally, this was not a particularly rare thing, but because it happened in the turbulent era at the end of the shogunate, there was an unusual process, and there were many different opinions about the marriage of Kazuo and General Mao, so it was particularly mysterious and became a mystery.

He Gong is the eighth daughter of Emperor Renxiao (reigned 18 17 ~ 1846), and the younger sister of Emperor Xiaoming (reigned 1847 ~ 1866), whose original name was parents and children. At the age of 4, she married the noble prince Akikawa Miyazhiren. Without the invasion of western powers and the political turmoil at the end of the shogunate, she could have spent her life smoothly and peacefully. However, although weak women at home and abroad have been used as bargaining chips in political transactions in history, the Harmony Palace, as the daughter of the emperor, has been pushed to the front of the historical stage by political storms. In the later period of Tokugawa shogunate, due to the invasion of western powers, the shogunate in power, despite repeated delays, had to yield to its strong pressure and agreed to establish the country and trade with western countries, but it was fiercely attacked by the imperial court and the monarchists. In order to ease the tension between the shogunate and the imperial court, so as to quell the general dissatisfaction and political turmoil of the people, the shogunate decision-making body redefined the relationship between the shogunate and the imperial court on the one hand, and promoted the "military-civilian integration" movement on the other hand, that is, the alliance of the shogunate empire. As an important step of "military-civilian integration", the shogunate invited the imperial court to marry Emperor Xiaoming's sister and 14 generation generals. To this end, the shogunate carried out many activities, such as suspending the marriage negotiation between Jiamao and the aristocrat who fell in love with Gong Zhen's prince's sister Lungong, spreading rumors that the person engaged with the palace was the Aikawa Palace, and the Aikawa Palace was uneasy about marrying Kazuo Palace because of the lack of seals. Despite this, Kazuo refused as always, and the shogunate invited him again and again, so that everyone was in an uproar and accused the shogunate of being rude. Ming Di was helpless, so she had to let her daughter, who was under two years old, marry General Jiamao instead of a husband. There is no doubt that the shogunate will not agree. Finally, Wakayama, who was 16 years old, had to reluctantly come to Edo from Kyoto in18612, and formally married Tokugawa Jiamao, who was the same age, in February of the following year.

The married life lasted for four years. In order to conquer Changzhou Francisco, which opposed the shogunate, Jiamao set out from Edo and set up camp in Osaka. The second conquest, repeated defeats and wars, worried, and finally died of narrow-minded attacks. He was only 20 when he died. Because of this, He Hong shaved her hair and became a nun, and changed her name to Jingkuanyuan.

1866 Emperor Xiaoming died suddenly (there are rumors that he was poisoned). 1868, the reformists were appointed by the imperial court. The original betrothed person of Kazuo Palace was Prince Chiren of Sakagawa Palace, who was the governor of the Eastern Expedition, and the troops were backward. The Tokugawa shogunate was in jeopardy, and Kazuo Palace was dragged into a very embarrassing situation. However, Enemy at the Gates, a court official who was mainly a vassal from the southwest, accepted the request of Shogunate Minister Katsuya when Edo was facing extinction, and sent a letter to the former betrothed Yukawa Palace, demanding to stop attacking Edo so as not to be destroyed by the fire, and asking for leniency to the Tokugawa family. This demand, together with other people's activities, finally contributed to the peaceful opening of Edo city, and at the same time, Hehong Palace also played an important historical role in turbulent times. After that, He Hong lived for about 10 years and died in 1877 at the age of 3 1 year.

At first, she stubbornly refused to marry the general, but after being forced to marry, she married for a short time (only four years). Moreover, it is said that the wives of 13 generation generals are very arrogant and indifferent to the Peace Palace and have been under the close surveillance of the General's Office. Therefore, many novels describe the Peace Palace as a victim of political transactions and a tragic figure, and many people shed tears of sympathy. However, there are also opposing views on this statement. For example, according to people in the general's office, Kazuo and Tokugawa Shigeru have deep feelings. The night before Jia Mu went to war, the couple talked until late at night. Kazuo also asked Jiamao to go to her hometown Kyoto to buy a belt made by the West Railway Station for her. Later, as the last gift of Jiamao, it was given to the lady according to Jiamao's last words. After receiving it, the lady thinks about things, but doesn't think about them all day. Among the Tokugawa generals, Jiamao is the only one who doesn't marry a mistress. For example, He Hong interceded for the Tokugawa family when the Imperial Army was in Enemy at the Gates, but it didn't seem to be completely forced. Some people think that as far as He Gong is concerned, the engagement with Prince Akikawa Miyazhiren was originally decided by the elders when they were young, not out of free choice. On the contrary, He Gong himself hopes to avoid the traditional internal marriage of the royal family, seek a new life and marry Jiamao. In this way, and the palace is not a victim of pure political transactions and unfortunate, on the contrary, it was very happy because of its marriage with Jiamao.

Kazuo was forced to marry the general, but later she seemed deeply attached to the general. It seems doubtful whether she is a tragic figure, and the photos of Tokugawa Jiamao described at the beginning of this article and the photos in her hand after Miyako's death seem to explain her nostalgia for Jiamao to the world. However, who can be absolutely sure that it was not given to her by others after her death? This is a mystery in itself.
