According to Indian scriptures, there are 330 million gods in the universe.

There is an interesting view in Japanese Shintoism that "everything is animistic", and where there are objects, there must be gods.

To some extent, the number of gods in "ancient stories" can basically despise the number of gods in any myth in the world.

This is a very special idea, or a lazy idea.

"As for why it is eight million, because eight million is a lot, let's assume that there are eight million things in the world."

So it is not that there are only 8 million gods in Japan, but that there are infinitely many gods living anywhere.
