Yin-yang and Five Elements is a philosophical concept in ancient China, and it is a simple materialistic view of the ancients' understanding of nature.

"Yi" said: "Those who are prone to Tai Chi will also have two devices." The so-called "two instruments" are yin and yang, so it is easy to say: "One yin and one yang is the Tao." Yin and Yang refer to the contradiction of things, such as day and night, cold and heat, length, gender, male and female, movement, rigidity and softness, and so on.

The five elements are a more detailed analysis of everything in the world. The ancients believed that the world was composed of five basic elements: gold, wood, water, fire and earth, and further believed that these five elements were mutually transformed and restricted, thus transforming and restricting each other, forming the structure and interest of everything in the world. The transformation of five elements can be divided into two types:

The traditional lunar calendar in China is actually a combination of yin and yang. The so-called twenty-four solar terms mean that the 360-degree angle of the earth's revolution around the sun is divided into 24 points, that is, every time the sun moves eastward 15 degrees on the ecliptic, it becomes a "qi", and it moves 360 degrees, making a total of 24 qi. In the lunar calendar, these 24 solar terms are named beginning of spring, Rain, Sting, Equinox, Qingming, Grain Rain, Long Summer, Xiaoman, Miscanthus and Summer Solstice. Among them, twelve solar terms, such as beginning of spring, Jingzhe, Qingming, Changxia, Mangzhong, Xiaoshu, beginning of autumn, Bailu, Hanlu, beginning of winter, Heavy Snow and Slight Cold, are called "solar terms", and the rest are called "Zhongqi". Solar terms are usually considered as lunar calendar, but they are actually calculated strictly according to the tropic year and belong to the lunar calendar model. The division of years and months used in the four-column arrangement is also strictly in accordance with the solar terms, rather than the usual division of years and months in the lunar or solar calendar. This is the basic principle of four-column arrangement, which makes the four-column arrangement unaffected by calendar changes and maintains its accuracy.
