Secret: Is the Daoshe Uprising Related to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement?

Is the Daoshe Uprising related to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement? Liu Lichuan, the leader of the Daohui uprising, publicly announced that Daohui was related to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, abided by the laws of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and even appointed Hong Xiuquan as the leader. Therefore, it is inevitable that some people will classify the Knife Club as a part of the Tian Ping Kingdom Movement. In fact, although Dao will be influenced by Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, it does not belong to Tianping Heavenly Kingdom at all.

Liu Lichuan, the leader of the uprising of the Knife Club, publicly announced that the Knife Club had ties with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, abided by the laws of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and even took Hong Xiuquan as the leader. Therefore, it is inevitable that some people will classify the Knife Club as a part of the Tian Ping Kingdom Movement. In fact, although Dao will be influenced by Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, it does not belong to Tianping Heavenly Kingdom Movement at all.

Some history books say that the Daoshe Uprising was "an important part of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom revolutionary movement". However, as far as historical facts are concerned, it did not belong to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement at all, but was just one of the many civil unrest that spread throughout the country under the influence of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement at that time.

It is mainly based on the following two points that the Knife Club does not belong to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement:

Knife Club is a triad society, which existed in the vast area of southern China before the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom offered sacrifices to the gods. It is a secret association, which is fundamentally different from the teachings of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Among the "seven schools" of Shanghai Knife Association, some are called White Dragon Association, some are called Double Money Association, some are called Green Scarf Association, some are called Red Scarf Association, and some are called Money Association. Although the names are different, they are collectively referred to as the Knife Club, all for the purpose of fighting against the Qing Dynasty and regaining sight. The proclamation issued by Dao Society after the uprising can also prove that it is different from the purpose of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. In these proclamations, the name of the Knife Club is "Daming Country" and the year is "Kaiyuan Year of Daming Country". The contents of the proclamation repeatedly declared that "the Tatar will be destroyed and the Ming Dynasty will flourish", "the evil spirits will be eliminated and the Ming Dynasty will be restored", "the Xingyihu will be destroyed and the greed and violence will be eradicated", and "the clothing system will be set up to commemorate Ming Di" (Note: Literature of the Knife Uprising) and so on. It has been more than 200 years since the Qing Dynasty made its capital in the Central Plains, and the anti-Qing people have long since died. The impression of the Ming Dynasty in people's minds has long been blurred, and simply fighting for a dynasty can no longer accommodate and solve the actual sufferings, hopes and demands of the people at that time. Therefore, secret societies such as underworld and heaven and earth societies will never become a big climate.

The Knife Club has no organizational connection with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. After the uprising of the filial piety society, Liulichuan saw that the Taiping Army was in full swing, repeatedly defeated the Qing army's north-south camp and sent troops to the Northern Expedition. He thought that the demise of the Qing Dynasty was not far away, and he deeply felt that his "Daming Kingdom" bureau was located in a remote cape, and the soldiers were too dull to command the people. He is determined to "transform from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom into a great cause." Therefore, in September of 1853, he wrote a "submission" to Hong Xiuquan in the name of "unfinished minister". In the play, he said that he had been preached by missionaries in Hong Kong as early as 1850 (30 years of Daoguang), believed in Christianity, and asked Hong Xiuquan to "canonize". According to Xia Xie's records in the Chronicle of China and the West, Liu's "gift" was sent to Tianjin by a consul named Wen. Unfortunately, Wen's ship was intercepted by the Qing army in Zhenjiang because it was armed. At the same time, Shang Liu Hong Xiuquan's "playing draft" was also seized and handed over to the Governor of Liangjiang. After the failure of the waterway, Liu later tried to establish contact with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom by land, but there was no following.

Although Liu did not establish any contact with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, he no longer used the title of "Daming Country" in his proclamation, and publicly gave orders under the banner of "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom" in the name of "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom unified politics and religion to recruit grand marshals". Even when talking to the British, American and French consuls, he claimed that "he belongs to the Taiping King and has paid the money under his command". Later, when Hong Xiuquan learned of this incident, he was very angry. "He issued a statement denouncing their immoral habits and bad hobbies and refused to admit that they were his followers." (In order to show that he is a "servant" of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and please foreigners, Liu also issued a notice of "showing the origin of mankind", asking members of the Knife Association to give up believing in "cults" such as Taoism and Buddhism and "worship the Holy Father" instead. Here, it can only show that some members of the Knife Society are in favor of the worship of the gods of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, but it does not mean that the Knife Society has any connection with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, let alone that the Knife Society is a part of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Because the members of the Knife Association basically believe in Taoism and Buddhism, this notice directly conflicts with their beliefs, so after posting it, "people around them expressed their contempt in words." Ironically, in the knife meeting, except Liu Lichuan (Chen occasionally borrowed the name of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom), almost other generals such as Li Xianchi, Pan Qiliang, Lin Afu, Cai Shiliang, etc. still used the name and title of "Daming Kingdom" when issuing notices, but refused to use the name and title of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Of the 25 proclamations issued by the Knife Association, only 7 used the name and year number of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and almost all of them were written by Liu Lichuan. It can also be seen that the knife has nothing to do with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.

Knife has nothing to do with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and foreigners recorded it in their books at that time. Mickey wrote in Aligo Biography: "Such a mob took the county seat of Shanghai by surprise. ... has nothing to do with the main force of Taiping Army. "
