The name "Dian" predates Yunnan and is the earliest preserved place name in Yunnan. From the Warring States Period to the early Western Han Dynasty, there was once a "Dian State" in today's Yunnan Province. It is recorded in Notes to the Southwest of Han Shu that there is Dianchi Lake in China, because of its name. In the Qing Dynasty and beyond, Yunnan was called Sanyi. In the eighth year of Yongzheng in Qing dynasty (1730), the host road and Xi road were set up, which was Qianlong for thirty-one years (1766), and the south of the host road was set up. So it is often called Yunnan by three names.
