On Hakka Customs in Huaiyuan

In the era of internet prevalence, it is easy to know the customs and habits of a nation/race, just search.

However, in history, Hakkas have migrated from south to north many times, influenced by the customs of indigenous minorities along the way. In details, Hakka customs in different places can't be unified by the whole people, so there really is a phenomenon of "different styles in ten miles, different customs in a hundred miles". Let me talk about this special difference.

Our landscape has bred many local dialects, most of which are incomprehensible, but the foreign Hakka dialects have firmly taken root in this land and become Huaiyuan Hakka dialects.

Or influenced by the influx of Putonghua, a local official language of half Hakka and half Putonghua has evolved here. Residents around the county have long been accustomed to this variant language, which has been passed down from generation to generation. In short, Mandarin is different, and Hakka is different. Even when high school teachers are in high spirits, a few words pop up from time to time. This strong rustic foreign accent made the children who came back from other places stunned, and the reaction was unbearable for a long time.

In remote and secluded mountainous areas, you can always see barren places, neat stone ridges and flat and tangible terraced ridges. They are scattered in the dense forest, mercilessly exploited by ancient roots, densely covered with moss, but still stand still, walking on the hard stone steps step by step, as if seeing the once prosperous here, and as if seeing the Hakka people wandering from place to place, far away from their native land.

Living old people often recall which couple in history, in which mountain nest, broke through the ground and gave birth to many children and grandchildren, and the descendants of these families have already left home, multiplied, or are still in the local area, recuperating.

There are only countless house ruins left in the forest. They are open and quiet, with their backs to the mountains and their doors gurgling. Tea and all kinds of exotic fruit trees are planted in front of their house. They are self-sufficient and invisibly spread and enrich local agricultural resources.

Affected by climate and geology, most of the houses in the mountains used to be two-story structures, with black tiles and mud walls, with one hall and two rooms up and down, or one hall and four rooms. Obviously, there is a wooden hanging building on the second floor, in order to let the clothes dry better receive the sunshine, or to climb the mountain better and see if there are any guests coming from afar on the way down.

There are also some famous Hakkas who have enough capital to directly choose the open and peaceful areas here, and come with their families and gradually become independent villages.

The style of the house built does not forget the palace style of the Han family in the Central Plains, the multi-column beam bucket arch mixed structure, the layout is rigorous, the orientation is emphasized, and the left and right sides are symmetrical. Its main feature is that there are many halls and patios in the house, showing the prosperity of the family everywhere.

Nowadays, these houses are mostly used as the origin of local families, and as ancestral temples, they are constantly being repaired and protected. Whether poor or rich, only by keeping a low profile and modesty can we live in harmony with local residents and continue to develop to the present scale.

The ancestral graves are always not far from the ancestral houses. On the loess slope, the people who just passed away just choose a place, dig a hole and bury the coffin, and after six to ten years, take out the body, clean it up and put it in the bone altar, and then ask Mr. Feng Shui to study it carefully, rebuild the grave and have a grand burial. This heavy burial, like when they passed away, will hold a banquet to entertain the condolences of relatives and friends from all sides. This special custom of removing bones was originally for fear of moving again, so as to take away the remains of ancestors and never abandon them. This also reflects the Hakka etiquette, filial piety and loyalty.

Hakka people have strong family values. No matter where they go, genealogy is a powerful link to maintain their roots and homes, and it also better promotes the unity and self-improvement of the people, which is conducive to inheriting the good family style that has existed since ancient times. The advantages of this cultural tradition have also invisibly infected and evolved many primitive Baiyue aborigines in the south. My generation is here, and the language and costumes of the She nationality have never been seen before, and they have been deeply sinicized by Hakka culture.

Hakkas believe in and worship nature. They think that every mountain and stone in the world has a soul. Every village has set up a community temple (land temple), and there are always old trees next to it, which have never been cut down for thousands of years. On holidays, the elderly will prepare three sacrificial animals to worship solemnly and pray for peace and good weather in the village.

Shegong Temple also witnessed the promise well, which is authoritative and binding. But it's best not to swear and gamble in front of it casually. Those who dare to go on impulse will be firmly remembered by local people, and will be said unhappy in the future and used as an excuse by future generations. Therefore, I have always regarded Shegong Temple as evil and rarely approached it.

Hakka people love to sing folk songs, and an illiterate woman can sing folk songs beautifully and rhythmically. Nowadays, young people love pop music. I only heard my grandmother sing it once, but I forgot the title. As for the housekeeper in all kinds of weddings and funerals, Xie Keci's rap level can be regarded as first-class kung fu, which has been passed down from generation to generation, simple and diverse, showing the thoughtful manners of the housekeeper, and it is still the case today.

I always thought that learning martial arts was a self-defense skill that Hakkas had to practice at that time. I have seen my grandfather practice boxing, sticks, knives and swords, and I studied hard when I was a child. Unfortunately, I didn't have the strength to do it. I turned into a gesture, but the action was very beautiful.

The point/hole/hand in folklore is also called "five/hundred/money" or "touch/technique". In fact, there is a time/formula, which is really related to the law of human/body/blood/liquid running. I have seen that formula, and it must be much more difficult than high school mathematics, let alone how to practice it. I, the flower of this beautiful era, can only regard this as a mysterious incident of Hakkas.

There are many festivals in traditional culture, but I only remember three festivals in one year since I was a child. For a newly established family, no matter how poor the in-laws are, they will never lose their due etiquette status in front of their in-laws. Festivals such as chicken, duck and fish are indispensable, and gradually these three festivals will be highlighted, namely Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Spring Festival.

Followed by Tomb-Sweeping Day, Mid-Autumn Festival and winter solstice, these are mostly family gifts. When you are poor, there will be no delicious food. Qingming went to the ancestral grave to weed and worship; Burn buns in front of the grave on Mid-Autumn Festival, or send messages from the river in the street. This is just a sentence in your mouth in the winter. There will be no change on the table anyway.

Since they are immigrants, most of them can't get such easy jobs as civil servants in the local area at once, and they must also fight against all kinds of exclusion and expulsion of aborigines. It is also very happy and satisfying to be able to start from basic agricultural production. Spring ploughing, summer sowing, autumn harvest and winter storage are all extremely labor-intensive. It was no better then than it is now. There are no workers to hire in traffic jams, and some people can't afford to hire workers, but there is a way after all. Neighborhoods coordinate with each other and exchange labor. Today, your family, tomorrow, my family, and farm work, many people and great strength, it is easy to solve. This way has continued to this day. The food in those days was better than usual. Even on credit, there was wine, meat and cigarettes, which was better than the holidays.

Speaking of the past events of predecessors, for example, yesterday, the gentle grandmother and elegant grandfather put on "side skirts" and "big pants". Grandma's cotton apron goes up to her chest and down to her knees. She wears a handkerchief on her head in winter and a cool hat in summer. Whenever guests come, they will take out all kinds of snacks and fruits and entertain them warmly. On holidays, when you receive gifts from guests, you should send "fruit bags" and towels when you send them away. If the situation is better, you should also deduct a few dollars with red paper.

"Fruit bag" is the characteristic of my local Hakkas. There are four kinds of fruit bags: raw bags, cooked bags, non-staple food bags and qianzi bags. Most of my contacts are non-staple food packages, probably because I am a child. There are sweet potato chips, popcorn, all kinds of qianzi, and the better is toffee. The mountain road is long. I always unpacked the fruit bags halfway, ate clean on the roadside, and looked forward to the Chinese New Year and visiting relatives. This is a very good memory.

It can also be called a unique existence, that is, "supporting wine" and "wrapping the circle". "Baoyuan" means happiness, security and reunion. It is made of cooked and mashed taro soup and sweet potato powder, and it is wrapped with diced winter bamboo shoots and lean meat. The matching wine is glutinous rice wine brewed many times, which is much stronger than ordinary water wine and delicious.

Old people often say that in the most difficult time, when there is no meat in the New Year's Eve dinner, there is a skilled person who carved wooden fish and meat on a plate, lifelike, and there are side dishes such as garlic and cabbage. At the same time, under the same circumstances, the host's hospitality is still the same, and the guests are still polite, holding chopsticks for show and being polite to each other.

Modesty, sincerity, simplicity, diligence and wisdom are the plum fragrance honed by Hakkas in the historical turmoil. After the hardships of generations of migration, they still maintain the integrity of the people/ethnic groups. This is the policy/source of autumn/harvest/promotion/righteousness, and the blood of Hakka people once burned fiercely in the red/colored land.
