About the author:

Lao She (1899— 1966), formerly known as Shu Qingchun, was Manchu. After liberation, he served as the vice chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Chinese Writers Association. 195 1 was awarded the title of "People's Artist" by the Beijing Municipal People's Government. After the Cultural Revolution began, he was brutally persecuted and committed suicide on1August 24, 966. His main works include the novel Lao Zhang's Philosophy, Zhao Ziyue, Erma, Camel Xiangzi, The Legend of Niu Tianci, Four Generations under One roof, Drummer, novella My Life, short story Crescent Moon, drama Long Xugou, Fang Mingzhu, Teahouse and so on. He is one of the most famous writers in the history of modern literature in China.

Teahouse, published on 1957, represents the highest achievement of Lao She's drama creation.

With the rise and fall of Yutai Teahouse, a big teahouse in old Beijing as the background, the works describe the changes of teahouses and various figures, reflect the social features of three different times in the 50 years from the end of Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China to the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, reveal the turmoil, darkness and evil of semi-colonial and semi-feudal old China, and declare the inevitable demise of old China.

In the first scene,1early autumn of 898, the garrison reform just failed. Shortly after Tan Sitong's interrogation, Yutai Teahouse was booming, and people of all religions used it as a place for mutual communication. In this scene, the author shows us that the decadent feudal society in China has come to an end.

4. Evil forces are extremely active. Imperialism, feudal forces and bureaucrats collude with each other and run amok. Villains and spies are like a duck to water.

In such an environment, people's lives and property are threatened at any time, and Wang Lifa hanged himself after being occupied by the teahouse. The author criticizes and curses such a society with strong passion, which shows that old China is doomed to perish. Through the description of Kangdali and others fleeing to the Xishan liberated area, the play implies that darkness is about to pass and light is coming.

This play is a masterpiece of the old society, which has produced strong repercussions at home and abroad.
