What is the meaning of "Twenty-four Bridges" in "Twenty-four Bridges on a Moonlit Night"?

Nowadays, the scenic spots east of the middle section of Niansi Road and west of Wu Ting Bridge are called Twenty-four Bridge Scenic Area.
