Where is the Huangzang Temple Water Control Project in Heihe River?

Huangzangsi Water Control Project is located in the upper reaches of Heihe River, with Sunan County in Gansu Province on the left bank and Qilian County in Qinghai Province on the right bank.

Huangzangsi Water Control Project is a key regulation and storage project in the main stream of Heihe River arranged by the State Council's "Recent Regulation Plan of Heihe River Basin". It is also an important water resources allocation project, ecological protection project and poverty alleviation and development project in Heihe River Basin. Huangzangsi Water Control Project, which controls 80% of the inflow of Heihe River, is an ecological leading project in the basin. The project scale is a large reservoir, with the maximum dam height of1.23m, the dam crest length of 2 10/0m, and the total storage capacity of 403 million cubic meters.

On June 20, 2023, the Huangzangsi Water Control Project in Heihe River was impounded, and the total storage capacity of the reservoir exceeded 400 million cubic meters, marking the initial operation of the project. On October 20th, 2023/KLOC-0, the Huangzangsi Water Control Project, the first backbone water storage project on the Heihe River, the second largest inland river in China, successfully passed the water storage acceptance and started construction.

Construction significance

The total storage capacity of Huangzangsi Water Control Project is 403 million cubic meters, which controls nearly 80% of the incoming water above Yingluo Gorge in Heihe River. After the project is completed and put into operation, it will provide important support for the scientific allocation of ecological, economic and social water in the middle and lower reaches of Heihe River and improve the comprehensive management ability of Heihe River water resources. Jiao Yong pointed out that the Huangzangsi Water Control Project is an important measure to implement the central government's strategy of strengthening ecological environment protection, vigorously promoting poverty alleviation and development in ethnic minority areas, and a new milestone in the comprehensive management of the Heihe River Basin.

Huangzangsi Water Control Project is located in the upper reaches of Heihe River and started construction in April 2006. It is mainly composed of barrage, water diversion and power station. The normal water level of the reservoir is 2,628 meters, with a total storage capacity of 403 million cubic meters and an installed capacity of 49 MW.
