Introduction of Nanning Dialect

Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is located in Cantonese dialect area. Nanning dialect was first introduced into Nanning as the local official language in Qing Dynasty. Later, businessmen in the two places gradually used vernacular Chinese, and vernacular Chinese began to develop among the people. During the period of the Republic of China, the New Guangxi Department vigorously promoted Cantonese to enter Guangxi, and the vernacular was widely spread. Before War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, there were not many people who spoke vernacular in Nanning. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, a large number of Cantonese people came to Nanning to escape the war. Since then, vernacular Chinese has gradually become one of the main communication languages in the city, so that the number and scope of users have exceeded the original Pinghua and Putonghua. Nanning dialect is an important branch of Cantonese, belonging to Yongxun dialect of Cantonese. Located in a special area, it combines some factors of Pinghua, Southwest Mandarin and even Zhuang language. Although it is similar to Guangzhou dialect, it is quite different. Nanning dialect is divided into new school and old school, and the new school accent is closer to modern Guangzhou dialect.
