How does Buddhism treat divorce?

It is not easy to find a clear basis for divorce in Buddhist scriptures. However, Buddhism advocates the happiness and responsibility of marriage. Since we are married, after the ceremony, we should love each other, respect each other, and do our duty. Buddhism forbids adultery. Looking at the breakdown of marriage in the world, most of them are because couples can't keep each other's chastity, like the new and hate the old, look at things from different angles, are not inclusive, and finally abandon them. In other words, most people who really get divorced are incompatible because of extramarital sex. If both husband and wife can insist on abstinence and adultery, then marriage is not easy to break up. Even after the breakdown of marriage, Buddhism advocates a second time, rather than the water under the bridge as people understand it. The reason is that the husband and wife are predestined friends and the children are in debt. Cherishing fate and not paying off bad debts is also a lesson for a person to cultivate tolerance, patience, see through and let go. A family can't understand and tolerate each other, let alone benefit all beings. Even if you marry someone else after divorce, it must be based on selfishness. Buddha said selfishness is evil. So such a marriage must be bad luck. How can you expect good results on the basis of evil? Therefore, although the Buddha forbade monks' disciples to get involved in marriage, he still allowed them to "get to know each other first, and then part" (volume 3 of the quartering method). Divorce between men and women will have a bad influence on each other's psychology, especially on the upbringing of children. It is a great sin to bear moral responsibility and let innocent children live in the shadow of their parents' divorce. According to this statement, it can also be said that Buddhism is against divorce. Therefore, there is a folk saying that it is better to break a marriage than to tear down ten temples. This statement may not be correct, but at least it reflects the importance that the world attaches to marriage. When the temple is demolished, it can be rebuilt, the marriage breaks down, the people's hearts are turned upside down, and the flesh and blood are separated. It will be difficult to get together again! What's more, marriage is the foundation of family, and family is the constituent cell of society. With the breakdown of marriage, the family is also broken, just like the human body. If there are too many broken cells, the body will get sick and even become cancerous. Therefore, divorce is also necessary for building a harmonious society and should not be advocated. But the Buddhist scriptures do not say that divorce is an act of breaking the precepts. Therefore, in the event of emotional conflict, lack of interest, or even abuse, it is possible to divorce under unbearable circumstances. Such a marriage should be that the fate of both parties has indeed come to an end; But if divorce is to satisfy lust, it is immoral and forbidden by Buddhism, so it is also guilty. Because the most unfortunate thing about a couple's divorce is their innocent children. How selfish it is to neglect one's children for lust! According to the ancient custom of China, a man who lost his wife can remarry, which is called a mistress, which is considered moral; If a woman loses her husband, only being widowed for life is a commendable virtue. This concept of "chastity" really comes from the custom of son preference. In India, this is not the case. According to the Kotama code of Hinduism, a wife can correspond with other men if she claims that her husband has not heard from him for six years. Buddhist scriptures say that a layman must first give up his wife and be his wife freely. Therefore, it is permissible and moral for a woman who has lost her husband to remarry.
