Who is the founder of Maoshan Daoism?

China Southern Dynasties Qi and Liang Daoshi Tao Hongjing founded Maoshan School because they built a temple in Maoshan and respected Sanmao Zhenjun as their ancestor.

One theory is that in the fifth year of the Yuan Dynasty (44 BC), Mao Ying, three brothers of Mao Shi, Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, and his younger brother devoted themselves to collecting herbs and making an alchemy in Maoshan to save the world, so they were called the founders of Maoshan Taoism. The three brothers of Maojia learned from Maoshan and started Maoshan Taoism. It was only later that Tao Hongjing combined Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and founded the Maoshan Taoist School.

Tao Hongjing and his disciples managed Maoshan for decades, which made it the center of Shangqing School, so later generations also called it "Maoshan School". His book True Letters Patent records the teaching history of Maoshan Taoism, with more than 100 people.

This school is mainly based on classic books such as Qing Shang, and regards the heavenly king, Taijun, Taidijun, Houque Dijun and Taishang Laojun in Yuan Dynasty as the highest gods. It advocates thinking about God, learning classics and practicing merits, and also advocates repairing valleys and guiding fasting.

Besides Tao Hongjing, there are Wang, Pan, Sima and Li Hanguang. In the Sui and Tang Dynasties, they emerged in large numbers and were hidden as authentic Taoism. In the Northern Song Dynasty, both Longhu Mountain and Gezaoshan were the three major Daoist Fuzuo schools, which were called Sanshan Fuzuo. After the Yuan Dynasty, it merged into Justice Road.
