Wenshan city, the capital of Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture, is located in the southeast of Yunnan Province, in the west of Wenshan Prefecture, bordering Yanshan County in the northeast, Maguan County in the south, Xichou County in the southeast, mengzi city in Honghe Prefecture in the west and Pingbian County across a river. It is the seat of Wenshan Prefecture Committee and government, and the political, economic and cultural information center of the whole state.

The name of the county was derived from the two hexagrams of "Ben" and "Big Beast" in the Book of Changes, that is, "Take Ben to get the source of the text, and take the big beast to know the solid mountain", so it was renamed Wenshan County.
