Many people say Chaoshan dialect is difficult to learn. Is that really the case?

As one of the three major languages in Guangdong-Chaoshan dialect, some people say that Chinese characters are the most difficult to learn in the world languages, while Chaoshan dialect is the most difficult to learn in Chinese dialects. As the first of the twelve most difficult dialects in China, Chaoshan dialect has its own uniqueness. I want to say, is Chaoshan dialect really that difficult to learn? I can only reply to you in Chaoshan dialect, uh-oh. Then why is Chaoshan dialect so difficult to learn or even understand?

First, Chaoshan Ten Tones

First of all, modern Chinese is spelled with four tones, but Chaozhou still retains the phonetic system of spelled with eight tones.

The eight tones of Chaoshan dialect are Shang Ping, Shangshang, Shangshang, Shang Jin, Xiaping, Xiashang, Xiajin and Xiajin, for example, the tone of "as low as Didi Chi Di cuisine". Among them, the upper level tone is equivalent to the level tone of Mandarin, which is basically the same as Mandarin, the upper level tone is basically the same as Mandarin, and the lower level tone is the same as Mandarin. A lower flat tone is equivalent to a higher flat pitch by one scale. Tangyin has no corresponding tone in Putonghua, let alone two tones, and has been integrated into the other three tones of Putonghua. If you think the above eight tones are difficult to remember, there is another formula to remember, that is, "Hong Kong police, old and weak", which happens to be Chaozhou Eight Tones.

There is also tone sandhi in Chaoshan dialect, that is, eight tones are placed in front of the same tone, and the other seven tones are changed in the back except for the upper tone (flat tone). Because tone sandhi produces two tones different from Chaoshan octave, Chaoshan octave is actually Chaoshan octave.

2. Chaoshan Eight Tones

Chaoshan dialect is also divided into eight accents, namely:

Jiangyin in Han Dynasty: mainly distributed in Chaozhou city, Chao 'an and Chenghai. Chaozhou Fucheng dialect is a unique accent. For example, it is pronounced "huek" and "rich". In other places, the vowel is ua, and Fucheng dialect is ue.

Jieyang Sound: Mainly distributed in Jieyang City and Jiedong County.

Jiexi dialect: mainly distributed in Chaoshan dialect area of Jiexi county. Jiexi sound and Jieyang sound have the same initials and finals, the same vocabulary pronunciation, but different intonation. Jiexi accent is used to drawing a long sound at the end, probably influenced by Hakka dialect, which sounds obviously different from Jieyang accent. Therefore, Jiexi sound and Jieyang sound should be two major schools of intonation in Rongjiang River Basin.

Lianjiang tune: The typical representative of Lianjiang tune is Chaoyang dialect, which has the characteristics of "falling tone, stress and loud voice". Chaoyang dialect is a complicated accent, and every town has its own accent. Haojiang's accent can be regarded as the hardest accent in Chaoyang dialect; Xiashan and Simapu have the strongest accents in Chaoyang dialect. Haimen accent is the most "soft" accent in Chaoyang dialect, and it is the soft language in accent. Huilai, the eastern part of Puning is also used to practice Jiangdiao, but it is not as heavy as Chaoyang dialect and its intonation is relatively light, but it still sounds like "Jiangqiang dialect".

Lianjiang dialect (Chaoyang dialect) is the closest pronunciation to ancient Chinese in Chaoshan dialect (experts say), and many words have vowel "u", which is the obvious difference between Lianjiang pronunciation and Rongjiang pronunciation and Hanjiang pronunciation.

Shantou accent: Shantou dialect is a new accent formed by combining the above accents. There are many pronunciations in Shantou dialect influenced by Chaoyang dialect, such as ie vowel in Hanjiang film, io vowel in Shantou dialect. Many words are closed at the end.

Rao Pingyin: Rao Pingyin is complex and diverse, and the accents of different towns are very different. The northern mountainous area has a strong accent, while the southern coastal area has a light accent, which is closer to Minnan dialect. Raoping dialect sounds close to Fujian Minnan dialect, probably because Raoping is close to Fujian and influenced by Zhangzhou pronunciation.

Rong Lian mixed cavity: In Chaoshan area, only two areas are Rong Lian mixed cavity.

The first area is Puning Zhongyuan, which is the transitional zone between Lianjiang dialect and Rongjiang dialect, represented by Liusha dialect. Liusha dialect is formed on the basis of Lianjiang sound, which combines Rongjiang sound and Jiexi sound. The initials and finals are the same as Chaoyang dialect, but the tone is biased towards Jiexi Chaoshan dialect, which sounds neither heavy nor light. It can be considered as Lianjiang's new accent and the most peculiar accent in Chaoshan area.

The second area is Xiqiao Town, Chaoyang District, which is located in the transitional zone between Chaoyang Dialect and Jieyang Dialect. Xiqiao accent belongs to the mixed language of Lianjiang Chaoyang accent and Rongjiang Jieyang accent, which sounds similar to Shantou dialect, but more biased.

Minnan sound: mainly distributed in Shanwei City and Nan 'ao County.

Generally speaking, the whole Chaoshan area can be said that Chaozhou dialect is the softest, Chaoyang dialect is the heaviest, Jieyang dialect is in between, and Shantou dialect is more neutral.
