What is nuclear sewage?

Nuclear sewage is radioactive sewage.

Nuclear sewage refers to waste water containing radioactive substances released by nuclear facilities (such as nuclear power plants, nuclear fuel processing plants, nuclear weapons production facilities, etc.) during operation or accidents. The main components of nuclear sewage include radionuclides, heavy metals and organic compounds. Therefore, nuclear sewage is radioactive sewage as its name implies. Such as high-level radioactive waste water produced by nuclear accidents or cooling water in direct contact with nuclear fuel.

Experts say that nuclear sewage is not equal to nuclear wastewater. Nuclear sewage is more harmful, containing 64 kinds of nuclear radioactive substances including tritium, such as uranium, plutonium, cesium, strontium, iodine and cobalt. Some of them have a long half-life, such as the half-life of uranium 238 is 4.5 billion years and that of plutonium 239 is 24,000 years. According to different sources and conditions, the concentrations and proportions of various radioactive elements in nuclear sewage are also different, but they usually far exceed international standards and safety limits.

Causes of nuclear sewage:

1. nuclear power plant operation: nuclear power plant uses nuclear energy to generate electricity, and its cooling system needs a lot of water. These water sources become radioactive after contact with nuclear reactors, and contain various nuclear wastes and radioactive substances.

2. Nuclear fuel processing: A large amount of wastewater will be generated during the manufacturing and processing of nuclear fuel, including the wastewater generated from the production of enriched uranium and plutonium.

3. Nuclear weapons production: Nuclear weapons production involves the processing and treatment of radioactive materials, and a large amount of wastewater will also be generated in these processes.
