Zhou Youguang, formerly known as Zhou Yaoping, was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province on June1906+1October 13, 2003. In his early years, he was mainly engaged in economic and financial work and worked as an economics professor. From June 1955, he began to study languages and characters off-duty, and participated in and presided over the drafting of the Chinese Pinyin Scheme. Under his leadership, China established the system of Chinese Pinyin. A hundred years later, Zhou Youguang published several new works, such as The Hundred Years New Draft and Wen Chao Dao Ji.

Zhou was born in Yixing, and his great-grandfather was an official and engaged in industry. He started a cotton spinning and weaving factory in Changzhou. During the Daoguang period, the Taiping Army rose up and my great-grandfather swore to defend the city. Later, because of the fall of Changzhou, he drowned himself, and the Zhou family's wealth was wiped out.

At the age of ten, Zhou Youguang moved to Suzhou with his family and entered a new school that was initially established at that time. 19 18 entered Changzhou senior high school (No.5 middle school in Jiangsu province) for preparatory courses, and entered middle school one year later, becoming classmates with later linguist Lv Shuxiang. 1923, graduated from Zhou Youguang middle school. Although he got excellent grades, his family was already poor at that time. He had to choose a tuition-free normal school, but he was unexpectedly admitted to St. John's University in Shanghai. Later, he got the financial support from his relatives and friends, and received 200 yuan tuition for Zhou Youguang, so he entered the school.

1925, the May 30th massacre occurred in Shanghai, and Zhou Youguang was transferred to Guanghua University for further study. After graduating from college, he and his wife Zhang Yunhe went to Japan to study. Zhou Youguang admired Japanese Marxist economist Kawakami, left Tokyo University and transferred to Kyoto University.

Changing careers at the age of 50: 26 letters in three years

As early as 1920, Zhou Youguang participated in the Latinized New Characters Movement in Shanghai, and the Reform Movement was supported by the Soviet Union.

1955 10, Zhou Youguang, then professor of economics at Fudan University, went to Beijing to attend the National Conference on Chinese Characters. A month later, he was informed to work in China Chinese Character Reform Committee.

1958, Zhou Youguang began to teach the course of Chinese character reform in Peking University and Renmin university, and the lecture "Introduction to Chinese character reform" was also published in 196 1.

From 65438 to 0980, he became one of the three China members of the Sino-American Joint Editorial Committee and the Advisory Committee for the Translation of The Concise Encyclopedia Britannica. The other two members are Liu Zunqi and Qian Weichang. The nickname "Zhou Baike" is also "deserved".

From 65438 to 0989, Zhou Youguang retired at home and continued to study writing.
