Where is Xuanwu Mountain?

Xuanwu Mountain is located in the northern suburb of jieshi town, Lufeng City, Guangdong Province, near Jieshi Bay in the South China Sea. With its beautiful coastal scenery, profound historical and cultural heritage, good ecological environment and mild four-season climate, it is a comprehensive tourist attraction integrating cultural leisure and tourism.

Shanwei Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area is built on the mountain, and the layout is a multi-unit building quadrangle. Axisymmetric layout is adopted, and the building structure is rigorous, with overlapping arches, high ridge cornices, carved beams and painted buildings, and traditional porcelain stickers, which are magnificent. Among them, the most famous are the Eight Scenes of Xuanwu, namely: the ancient temple of Yuanshan, the inscription of Sanbao, the fish leaping over Longmen, the unicorn looking forward, the stone brand towering into the sky, the love of the four beauties, the soaring fishing songs and the view of the sea at Jieshi.

The Historical Evolution of Xuanwu Mountain

In the first year of Jianyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1 127), villagers in jieshi town, Lufeng City built a small temple on the mountain in the northern suburb of Jieshi (formerly known as Guishan) to worship the statue of "Xuanwu, Yuan Sky God in the Arctic", and then moved the small temple to its present site (now Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area in Shanwei).

In the twenty-seventh year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1394), the commander-in-chief of Jieshiwei rebuilt the small temple into a "Xuanwu Temple" when building the Jieshiwei City. In the fifth year of the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1577), Hou, the commander-in-chief of Jieshiwei, presided over the expansion of Xuanwu Temple to its existing scale, formerly known as "Xuanshan Temple", where monks worshipped Buddha and incense flourished.

With the expansion and prosperity of temples, the names of "Xuanshan Temple" and "Xuanwu" (another name for Yuan Sky God) began to spread, while the people collectively referred to the mountains and temples as "Xuanwu Mountain" and called them "Xuanshan Temple" and "Xuanwu Mountain Temple", which is also the origin of the name of Xuanwu Mountain tourist area in Shanwei.

In the forty-second year of Qing Qianlong (1777), the abbot Xi Shi presided over the construction of Yuanshan Temple. In the 19th year of Daoguang (1839), the abbot and monk Bietian presided over the construction of Yuanshan Temple.

In the sixth year of Guangxu (1880), the Yuanshan Temple was eaten by ants, and was built by Guangdong Navy Governor, Li, Deng and abbot Zeng Shida.

1980, with the approval of Lufeng Municipal People's Government, Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area in Shanwei was established, Yuanshan Temple was restored, and tourism was developed. 198 1, Rebuilding Fuxing Tower in Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area, Shanwei. 1983 to 1985, the yuanshan temple is well renovated. 1986, Xuanwu mountain stage was rebuilt in Shanwei Xuanwu mountain tourist area, and the restored yuanshan temple still retains the style of ancient buildings in Ming and Qing dynasties.
