Why are the administrative divisions of Golmud disconnected from each other?

Yes, the administrative division of Golmud City is divided into two parts. One part is in the Qaidam Basin, with an area of 1 18900 square kilometers and an altitude of about 2800 meters. The other is located on Tanggula Mountain at the border of Qinghai-Tibet, called Tanggula Mountain Town, Golmud City, with an area of 47,800 square kilometers and an altitude of more than 4,700 meters, 425 kilometers away from Golmud City, separated by Zhiduo County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province (there seems to be Qumalai County). It is one of the large township administrative regions in China.

This area was originally under the jurisdiction of Zhiduo County, Yushu Prefecture. The Qinghai-Tibet Highway was built in 1950- 1954. Yushu prefecture and its Zhiduo county are far away from here, and the traffic is very inconvenient. It is difficult for them to participate in the management of this northwest artery. In order to effectively manage this artery into Tibet and the lifeline of national defense, the Tanggula Mountain Working Committee (county level) was established in March, 1956, and stationed in Tanggula Mountain (hot spring, 5600 meters above sea level, 546 kilometers away from Golmud), which belongs to the Qaidam Basin Working Committee of Qinghai Province.

1958, the Tanggula Mountain Working Committee moved northward to Tuotuo River Bank (at an altitude of 4,533 meters, 425 kilometers away from Wenquan12/kloc-0), with a lower altitude and closer to Golmud (now Golmud).

1June, 964, the State Council approved the cancellation of Tanggula Mountain Working Committee and its administrative area was merged into Golmud City.

Since then, the names of administrative divisions in this area have been changed several times, but they are all under the jurisdiction of Golmud City.
