How should Buddhism view the issue of divorce?

The issue of divorce is not easy to find a clear basis in Buddhist scriptures. However, Buddhism advocates the happiness and responsibility of marriage. Now that we are married, we should love each other, respect each other, do our duty and do our duty. Adultery is forbidden in Buddhism, and marriage breaks down, mostly because husband and wife can't keep each other's chastity. Because both husband and wife can adhere to the principle of abstinence, marriage is not easy to break up. Even if the marriage breaks down, Buddhism advocates a second time; Therefore, although the Buddha forbade monks' disciples to get involved in marriage, he still allowed monks to say,' If men and women get acquainted first and then leave, they will make up' (Volume III of the Four Divisions). Because divorce between men and women has a bad influence on each other's psychology, especially on the upbringing of children, we must bear moral responsibility. According to this statement, it can also be said that Buddhism is against divorce.

But the Buddhist scriptures do not say that divorce is an act of breaking the precepts. Therefore, in case of emotional conflict, lack of interest, or even due to major reasons such as abuse, you can divorce if you can't bear it. It is immoral and forbidden by Buddhism to divorce in order to satisfy one's lust, so it is also guilty. Because the most unfortunate thing about a couple's divorce is their innocent children.

In the ancient custom of China, a man who lost his wife could remarry, which was called a mistress, and it was considered moral. If a woman loses her husband, only being widowed for life is a commendable virtue. This concept of' chastity' is really due to the custom of son preference. In India, this is not the case. According to the Kotama code of Hinduism, a wife can correspond with other men if she claims that her husband has not heard from him for six years. When a layman in Buddhist scriptures becomes a monk, he must first give up his wife and be a wife freely. Therefore, it is permissible and moral for a woman who has lost her husband to remarry.

Therefore, Buddhist disciples can divorce, but whether they are Buddhist disciples or not, divorce is something that needs careful consideration.

First of all, we must know that Buddhism believes that everything has a reason, the reason is scattered, and the reason is empty. Marriage is the same, there will always be a beginning and an end. Therefore, if the karma is really exhausted, divorce is not impossible.

But this does not mean that Buddhism advocates divorce, and Buddhist disciples must carefully consider this matter. Even if you are really determined to divorce, you should decide and handle it on the basis of altruism. We should fully consider the needs of children and parents and try not to hurt them because of their decisions.

At the same time, whether it is marriage or divorce, making this decision must be based on making both sides' lives happier. Therefore, divorce should also consider each other's mentality. As the saying goes, "old jobs don't add new seedlings", get together and part, and don't have a bad relationship because of divorce.

Therefore, when deciding whether to divorce, we must be cautious. On the basis of mutual harm, properly handled divorce does not violate the law or Buddhism, and naturally there will be no causal relationship.
