Is the zodiac based on the solar calendar or the lunar calendar?

In ancient China, beginning of spring was the beginning of the zodiac. Later, according to the modern calendar edited by Purple Mountain Observatory of China Academy of Sciences, China designated the first day of the first month as the beginning of the Year of the Zodiac. Folklores all over the country take the first day of the first month as the starting point of the zodiac, and the official also takes the first day of the first month as the beginning of the zodiac year.
