How did the saying that Tanzhe Temple came first, and then Youzhou City came from?

The saying that "Tanzhe Temple comes first, then Youzhou City" has existed since ancient times, and there are related historical records. Whether this statement is correct or not depends on how Kafka became the Tanzhe Temple.

There are various legends about the origin of the name of Tanzhe Temple. According to a folklore, when the founder Hua Yan expanded Kafka's life, he would come to Tanzhe Mountain every day to sit quietly, without eating or drinking, and meditate and chant Buddhist scriptures. A local rich man saw the old monk exposed to the sun and asked him what he was doing. Hua Yan replied, "Please give a piece of land and build a temple." The rich man asked, "How much land do you want?" The master replied, "as long as the carpet under me covers such a large piece of land, it is enough." Seeing that the old monk was only two feet square on the carpet, the rich man readily agreed. Unexpectedly, the old monk threw the carpet into the air, and the carpet grew bigger and bigger, covering the southern foot of the treasure Mount Everest. Seeing this, the rich man knew that the profound teachings of the mage could bring him blessings, so he willingly gave the land to the old monk. Monk Hua Yan built a temple on the basis of Kafka. After the temple was built, it was named "Felt Cover Temple" and later, it was also called "Tanzhe Temple".

Another legend is that monk Huayan came to the foot of Mount Everest while meditating everywhere and lived in a small ruined temple called Kafka Temple. Jiafu Temple is somewhat dilapidated, but the surrounding scenery is pleasant. There is a big water pool in front of the temple, named Qinglong Lake, which is a sea eye and can reach the East China Sea directly from the bottom of the pool. There is an old dragon living in the pond. It manages the clouds and rain on this land. Monk Hua Yan preaches in Kafka Temple every day, and the audience is crowded with people. The old dragon of Qinglong Lake also swims to the pool every day to listen to the sermon of monk Hua Yan. After a long time, the old dragon was influenced by the Buddhism taught by monk Hua Yan, and he wanted to meet Hua Yan very much, so he became a disciple. On this day, when monk Hua Yan was sitting by the Qinglong Lake giving a lecture to everyone, the old dragon stirred up several waves in the pool, scaring away the people who listened to the lecture, but monk Hua Yan stood still. When Lao Long saw that the time had come, he showed his true colors, explained the reasons and kowtowed. Seeing that Lao Long was so sincere, Hua Yan made it clear that he intended to build a big temple on the base of Qinglong Lake, and asked Lao Long to "give way to his home" and move to another place to live. The old dragon nodded repeatedly. On the same night, the sky suddenly became stormy, and the waves in Qinglong Lake were monstrous, with lightning and thunder, and the old Longteng flew north in the sky.

After dawn, people were surprised to find that the Qinglong Lake, which was still dark yesterday, became a flat ground, and a pair of huge glass kisses slowly arched from the ground. It turns out that this is a pair of dragons of the old dragon. In order to protect the owner and the temple, the old dragon turned them into glass kisses and stayed to protect the temple. Subsequently, the monk Hua Yan led the monks and lay people to build a big hall on this flat land, and placed a pair of dragons at both ends of the roof at the top of the hall, thus building the famous Tanzhe Temple. In order to commemorate the concession of the old dragon and because the treasure Mount Everest is covered with philosophical trees, people renamed it Kafka Temple Tanzhe Temple.

For these legends, more people think that this may be due to people's love for Tanzhe Temple. How many times has the name been changed from Kafka Temple to Tanzhe Temple?

According to the existing historical records, Tanzhe Temple was first built as Kafka Temple, and was renamed Longquan Temple after the expansion of Wu Zetian in the Tang Dynasty. The Jin Dynasty changed its name to Da Man Ju Ji, and the Shogunate Ji was restored in the first year of Tianshun in Ming Yingzong. During the reign of Qing Kang Gan, it was rebuilt on a large scale and renamed Yun Xiu Temple. The Qing Dynasty was the most prosperous time of Tanzhe Temple, with the scale seen today. Today, most of the buildings in the temple are relics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Interestingly, this thousand-year-old temple was renamed many times before and after. It was not officially named Tanzhe Temple in previous dynasties, but now it is called Tanzhe Temple. What is the reason? It is said that there is Longtan behind the temple and Zheshu in front of it. According to this statement, there should be many Zheshu trees in Tanzhe Temple, but why are there so few left now? According to records, there is a book "Thousand Chapters of Philosophers" on the hillside. This tree is full of treasures, and its roots can dispel wind and remove dampness, promote blood circulation and relax tendons, and can treat rheumatoid arthritis. Zhemu bark can tonify kidney and cool blood, and its medicine name is "Zhemu white bark". Stems and leaves can cure boils, and fruits can clear heat, cool blood and activate collaterals; Zhemu can be used as exquisite furniture, and it is also said that Zhepi can cure women's infertility. As a result, people rushed to dig, leaving only a few plants in front of the temple, and finally they all died. However, in recent years, the local government has replanted new seedlings to meet the interest of tourists, and the real day of Tanzhe Temple is not far away.

At this point, it can be confirmed that Tanzhe Temple was built in the Jin Dynasty, and its name is basically clear. Well, there is a saying in history that "Tanzhe Temple comes first, then Youzhou", while there is a folk saying that "Tanzhe Temple comes first, then Beijing". What's going on here?

Today's splendid Beijing, from the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, is called thistle or thistle in history books, but it is also called Youzhou. That's because the traditional concept holds that the world is divided into Kyushu and the northern region is collectively called Youzhou, but this only appears as a geographical concept of administrative divisions. During the Warring States period, because Yan controlled the surrounding area of Beijing today, this area was also called the land of secluded Yan. Beijing was developed and rebuilt on the basis of Dadoucheng in Yuan Dynasty.

At the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, at the suggestion of General Batulu and Liu, a scholar and counselor of Han nationality, sai-jo Kublai Khan built the Dadu City in the 13th year of Zhiyuan (1276), which was more than 800 years later than the Jin Dynasty. It was surrounded by dragons and tigers in the secluded places, and the situation was magnificent, with Jianghuai in the south and desert in the north. Prior to this, the Liao Dynasty took Youzhou as Nanjing in 9 16, which was nearly 500 years later than the Jin Dynasty, even more than 400 years later than the Tang and Wu Zetian Dynasties. Therefore, the relationship between Tanzhe Temple and Beijing as mentioned in folk proverbs is true.
