General situation of the gate of toilet god gate

Nanjing Ming Dynasty inner city gate, the relevant legend is a folk jingle: "thirteen inside, eighteen outside, a bolt inserted outward." This gate, which is described as "the bolt is inserted outward", refers to the toilet god gate in Nanjing in the Ming Dynasty, and the folk jingle vividly summarizes its special architectural form. The toilet door is very small, with the door inside and the urn outside. The urn door is not facing the gate, but opened in the northeast corner of the urn door, so the Nanjing toilet god door in Ming Dynasty is also called the outer urn door. Today, the Toilet God Gate is a well-preserved city gate in Nanjing, and the other towers such as the Wengcheng, Sanmen and Sankai are still there.

According to the records of the Ming Dynasty, the toilet gate was personally surveyed and planned by Liu Bowen, a military adviser of Zhu Yuanzhang. When entering and leaving the city gate, only one city gate is opened at ordinary times, and a hole is opened in an emergency, which fully embodies Zhu Yuanzhang's idea of building the city in different ways in different places and under different environmental conditions.

The toilet door plays an important role in military defense.
