Fortune-telling in the Republic of China

People in China have always believed in fairy tales, so many professions, namely "charlatans", have been born. During the Republic of China, there was such a charlatan, who was called "the first stick of the Republic of China". The provincial chairman kowtowed when he saw him, and he lived until after the liberation of China.

This "Liu Shenxian", whose real name is Liu, also known as Liu Zongpei, was born in Xindian District, Weiyuan County, Sichuan Province in the 9th year of Guangxu reign (AD 1883). He used to teach in a private school in his early years, but he always thought that this career had no future, so he worshipped a quack doctor as a teacher and learned all kinds of "immortal skills."

In the third year of Qing Dynasty (A.D. 19 1 1), Liu officially made his debut, calling himself "White Crane". He combined Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, created a "consistent innate avenue", and preached everywhere that "when disaster strikes, you can avoid Taoism" and confuse the people.

In the ninth year of the Republic of China (A.D. 1920), Liu gathered more than 10,000 followers near Weiyuan County and was called "Liu Shenxian" by them. Since then, "Liu Shenxian" has successively opened many pavilions and altars, which have always been "innate avenues", and the scale is huge and the momentum is not diminished.

Although Liu has gained enough followers and interests among the people, he is not satisfied with this, and the "consistent innate avenue" began to expand to Sichuan military and political circles.

At that time, because the sky was high and the emperor was far away, the local regime was very serious. Speculative politicians, rich gentry, local tyrants and paoge bosses formed armies to attack each other, and there were countless warlords, large and small. The five strongest people are Liu Xiang, Liu, Deng Xihou, Yang Sen and Wang.

Liu first developed these five warlords into his disciples, and gave each of them a Taoist name, namely "Yuxian", "Yuxian", "Yu Qi", "Yu Yong" and "Yubao". Because the names of the five warlord leaders contain the five elements of the Chinese zodiac, they are also called "Jin Mu Fire, Water and Earth".

Liu Xiang, a disciple of Liu, was elected commander-in-chief and governor of Sichuan Army in 192 1. 1On July 7, 937, after the full-scale outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he led the Sichuan army out of Sichuan to resist Japan, and vowed: "As long as the enemy does not withdraw from the border, the Sichuan army will not return!" Unfortunately, Liu Xiang died at the front the next year.

After learning from the scriptures, Liu Xiang built a mansion named "Fairy House" for his magic stick master in Chongqing. He spent a total of 40 thousand on this mansion, which is almost the expenditure of an integrated army for a whole month. Every time Liu's disciples, big and small, including Liu Xiang, go to the "Fairy House" to visit Master, they all kneel down to pay their respects.

Although a large number of warlords in Shu, such as Liu Xiang, worshipped Liu, most grass-roots officers of Sichuan Army also worshipped Liu Shenxian. However, some people of insight in the Sichuan army are very disgusted with this magic stick. For example, Yan Xiaohu, the head of Liu Xiang, once advised Liu Xiang: "Please kill Xie Chuanjun, or the erosion of Sichuan in the future will be a hundred times greater than today!"

Liu Xiang was noncommittal about Yan Xiaohu's suggestion, perhaps because he valued his colonel, or maybe he didn't value his master so much, and he didn't pay much attention to Yan Xiaohu's remarks of "deceiving teachers and destroying ancestors".

1934, Liu was appointed as the "Chairman of the Sichuan Military Commission against Banditry" and led the Sichuan warlords to encircle the Red Army that entered Sichuan on the Long March, but failed after Liu's "good day and auspicious day". The "immortal skill" of "Liu Shenxian" doesn't seem to work, which also leads to a rift in the mentoring relationship between Liu and Liu Xiang.

1936, Liu and Liu Xiang turned against each other. In order to avoid waiting for revenge from Yan Xiaohu and others, Liu quickly fled from Chengdu to Shanghai. After Liu Xiang died of illness in the anti-Japanese front, Liu's disciples took the opportunity to spread rumors: Liu Xiang died because he drove away the immortals, and Liu got along well in Shanghai, even gaining Du's respect.

Since then, "Liu Shenxian" has held high the banner of "being the master of the world" in Shanghai, and asked for one or two gold fortune-telling for local politicians, wealthy businessmen and celebrities.

After the founding of New China, Liu was arrested for fraud and was sentenced to death on 1955 for "counter-revolutionary crime", with a two-year suspension. However, "Liu Shenxian" did not live for the next two years, so he "drove the crane to the west" and died on the way to medical treatment outside the hospital. It seems that not only people are bound to die, but even the so-called "immortals" are bound to die of old age and illness. I wonder how Liu's former disciples will feel after learning that his "immortal" master will also die of illness.
