Brief introduction of Foxiang Pavilion in Summer Palace

1 Introduction

The Buddha Pavilion in Beijing is a magnificent tower-shaped religious building and the center of the architectural layout of the Summer Palace. The word "Buddha incense" comes from Buddhism's praise of Buddha. This pavilion is modeled after Pagoda of Six Harmonies in Hangzhou. It is built on a 20-meter-high stone platform with eight sides, three floors and four double eaves. It is about 40 meters high (10.225+7.555+5.975+12.660 = 36.415 meters), with eight large iron rosewood columns in it, which go straight to the top and have a 20-meter-high stone platform foundation. The upper table of the pavilion is called "the style of wind dispersion", the middle table is called "the weather shines again", the lower table is called "the fragrance outside the clouds" and the pavilion is called "the Buddha Pavilion". Inside, the Buddha was attracted, and every month Cixi would burn incense and worship the Buddha.

2. Historical evolution

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1736- 1795), a nine-story Wanshou Pagoda was built here, and the eighth floor was "ordered to stop repairing" and the Buddha Pavilion was rebuilt. 1860 (the tenth year of Xianfeng) was destroyed by the British and French allied forces. During Guangxu period (1875- 1908), it was rebuilt on the original site to worship Buddha statues.

Foge height is 4 1 m. It was built on a 20-meter-high stone platform, supported by eight hard iron pear giant columns. Its structure is complex, unique, standing tall and magnificent. It surrounded the beautiful scenery of Yuanmingyuan and Changchun Garden in the east, Jingming Garden, Jingyi Garden and Wanshou Mountain in the west, and skillfully combined the "three mountains and five gardens" at that time into one, making it a grand royal garden scenic spot. It is said that this huge building was burned down by the British and French allied forces and rebuilt in 189 1 with 782,000 silver, which is the largest project of the Summer Palace. Boarding the Buddha Pavilion, you can get a panoramic view of the surrounding dozens of miles. The Buddha Pavilion is 4 1 m high, with eight sides, three floors and four eaves. It was built on a huge stone platform in front of Wanshou Mountain. This platform is built around the mountain. Hold the Buddha pavilion high above the ridge. Looking up higher than Yun Biao, you can see its shadow everywhere.

4 Tourism characteristics

The pavilion stands on the top of the mountain, and the mountain is beautiful because of the pavilion. Wanshou Mountain is Xishan in the distance and Yuquan Mountain in the vicinity. It is small and medium-sized, with extraordinary momentum, pines and cypresses, and lush colors. Kunming Lake, facing the Buddha Pavilion, just reflects all this. Lush mountains, clear water and skylights make people feel very comfortable. The gardening technique-borrowing scenery-which China gardeners talk about is perfectly used and embodied here.

The Buddha Pavilion is built on a hillside more than 60 meters high, with a height of 465,438+0 meters, 8 sides, 3 floors and 4 double eaves. The shape is based on the design of the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuchang. It was built during the Qianlong period to recruit Buddha. On the first and fifteenth day of the first lunar month, Cixi burned incense and worshipped Buddha here. Foxiang Pavilion is the central building of the whole garden, the symbol of the Summer Palace, and one of the outstanding ancient buildings in China, with high architectural artistic value. There are eight-shaped steps in front of the pavilion, and you can enjoy the scenery on Kunming Lake and the surrounding scenery when you climb the Buddha Pavilion.

Going to the Buddha Pavilion is the "sea of wisdom" of the Summer Palace, commonly known as the "Hall without Beams". The internal structure supports the top with criss-crossing arched specimens, and there is no load-bearing beam. Without wood, the temple was able to escape the fire of 1860, but the Buddha statues in the temple and more than a thousand small Buddha statues on the outer wall of the temple were taken away by robbers.

5 related stories

When Qianlong built Qingyi Garden, it was originally planned to build a nine-story pagoda here.

When it was built to the eighth floor, the imperial edict was carried out, and the eight floors that had been built were demolished and a square pavilion, namely Foxiang Pavilion, was rebuilt. There have always been different opinions about tearing down towers and building pavilions. One view is that the Wanshou Pagoda built by Qianlong is nominally to celebrate the mother's birthday, but in fact it connects the three mountains and five gardens into one, and wants to make the Wanshou Pagoda the main building carrying the royal gardens of the East and the West. However, when it was built to the eighth floor, it was found that it was inconsistent with the original imagination, so the tower was demolished and the pavilion was built; Another view is that there have always been many towers in the west of Beijing. In order to avoid overlapping tower shadows, Qianlong made up his mind to tear down the tower and build a pavilion. In fact, the construction of the exhibition hall has indeed received good results. The pavilion is tall and imposing, large and steady, and harmonious with Qian Shan Building.

There is also a legend that the emperor wanted to build a big garden in this beautiful area of Haidian. The earliest emperor Qianlong, people say that this Wanshou Mountain is an ancient tomb, the tomb of a princess in the Ming Dynasty. It is said that this princess was not a good master in those days, and her tomb could not be moved! When Qianlong heard this, he said what he was afraid of. When Gan Long came to the scene, he saw that the big stone gate of the tomb had been dug up, and the door was engraved with eight big characters: "If you don't move me, I won't move you!" Ganlong broke out in a cold sweat. Hurriedly ordered people to cover all the soil back, and built a ghost in damiao town on Wanshou Mountain. This is the Buddha Pavilion.
